Snow's on the way
- AF (10th Dec 2022 - 07:50:32)

The met office say snow is on the way for this area in the next 36 hours. If it happens stay indoors and if you have to drive the secret to driving in snow is to go SLOWLY, it's fine to travel at 5-10 MPH.

I think if it snows I'll be outside enjoying it, actually

I think if it snows it will be a miracle......or just understand it is DECEMBER!

Most of the apps and forecasts showing snow in Kent and Sussex, not this far west.

Just for the record, whilst I don't recommend thrashing it around, you don't actually have to drive slow. You have to drive smooth, less aggressive acceleration, braking and steering input is the key.

Now obviously in some instances the only way to do this is to drive slow, for example if you are in a built up area where you need to be prepared to stop or change direction in a short distance if a person stepped into the road, and you can only do this from a low a speed but it you were on a wide open, straight, flat road, with miles of visibility and no visible potential hazards you could build up plenty of speed as you have a lot longer to slow down.

If you don't feel comfortable doing the above, the best thing is not to drive, rather than creep around and not be assertively in control of your vehicle. This statement probably applies to most people I see driving in the UK in snowy and icy conditions.

I used to live in the Northern US where snowy winters were normal, for the most part people got on pretty normally in snowy conditions, without crawling round everywhere, and didn't seem to have any more accidents than we do here.

Yes but it's because snow is infrequent here that we get caught out, in some places they cope better because it's more common so you invest in snow driving gear, tyres etc. The best thing is not to drive in snow, but actually far worse is black ice which often comes after rain and sub zero temperatures, which thankfully I don't see forecast, snow is actually fairly good to drive in until it's becomes too compressed. Black ice on a hill you have no hope unless you have chains, but you should go slow and as said above accelerate smoothly, don't brake unless you need to, anticipate, etc etc most Brits driving in snow haven't got a clue though it's pure luck with them, but this is all just from my personal experience, I remember once going down a hill sideways we all learn the hard way!
