Glorious Canadian Maples
- Paul Robinson (7th Oct 2022 - 19:42:22)

Has anyone noticed the stunning foliage on the Canadian Memorial Maples by the sides of the A 3 north of Liphook, running up to Hindhead.

The colours are spectacular at this time of year.

Yes, they seem brighter than ever this year and are just glorious. I do worry though that they are gradually becoming concealed by the growth of our native saplings and scrub. We certainly don’t want to lose sight of them as they depict the wonderful link between our village and Canada.

Hi Paul,
Yes a glorious tribute every year to the soldiers based in the area during World-War One, and Two.

A great unique sight every Autumn in our area.

Love seeing them every year!

A few years ago I happened to mention to a Canadian that we had these maples, and they said they don't actually live that long. Does anyone know more about that? He suggested 50 years, but please be aware this was the briefest of conversations and based on the fact his daughter was studying botany.

Hi Paul M,

According to the Woodland Trust in the U.K., Red Maple Trees can live around 350 years.

A great tribute to area from the Canadians.

Is there a way in which you can see the maples on foot with my children?

Parking is available just off the A3 in the top of Rectory Lane going North bound or in the car park or lay going South bound.

Although they are on both sides of the A3, it is possible to walk among them from Ontario Camp (Bramshott Common).

Even the fallen leaves that have coated the ground look like a large scale patchwork quilt. Quite beautiful.

There is a great drone pic of the maple trees on the Liphook FB page.

Hi,
Anyone with a copy of last Wednesday's Daily Mail newspaper, can see see on page 9 a glorious aerial photo of the maple trees.

There are 400 that stand along the A3. Each tree is twinned with a soldiers Canadian grave at Bramshott and Grayshott.

The aerial image of the maples has been so popular that FireflyUAV, who took the photo, has included a canvas print of it for sale on their Etsy page. A link to the page is below if anyone is interested.
