Recommendations for a local firewood/log supplier
- Local Resident (6th Oct 2022 - 12:09:57)
Hello folks.
As above. For domestic use.
Yes - I could just use the internet, but I was after a recommendation. Might mean I find a cheaper solution. :)
I don't need split logs, just cut into lengths
Cheers

Not trying to hijack a perfectly reasonable thread, but it does seem a suitable thread to post.
I understand times are getting tough and many will be looking at alternative fuel sources, but please think carefully before turning to burning wood or coal people, reports show that it is responsible for 40% of all the most harmful and dangerous particulate emission in the country (PM2.5) that cause fine particle respiratory and heart issues and that's across the whole nation including all vehicles and every other kind of emission together compared to the small amount of wood burners at the current time!
One report said that the average wood burning stove emitted 750 times the harmful particulates of an average HGV lorry, worse in the home but still dangerous levels in the neighbourhood.
That's a pretty sobering thought!
Apparently since 2022 all new stoves must meet much higher and more stringent emission controls so if people want to burn wood or coal, maybe consider investing in one of these new ones and ensure all wood is suitable, dried and from a reputable source.
Don't want to be a killjoy, we all love a good fire and hope the op takes this in spirit it is posted!

This is a classic Liphook Talkback response, in that:
1. It doesn't answer my question.
2. It makes me feel a bit guilty that I asked the question in the first place.
3. It talks at length about a related matter, which the poster clears feels strongly about.
My original question still stands.
:)

Hello
I get my logs from Luff's in Headley, I think it is Mill Lane Farm shop, anyway easy to find.
I have had three winters logs from them, they are cut to about 9" and fit most wood burners, however they are split, you can see them if you call in
Top quality, choice of softwood, mixed, or all hardwood, and a measured load, unlike the pick up truck. I think their prices are most reasonable too.
Wishing you a cosy winter.

I've been using Liphook logs for years for my log burner - I've tried other suppliers in the past, but prefer Liphook logs the most.
I hope that helps.

Ha he, yes entirely up to you whether you feel guilty or not, certainly not necessary as I think (as is my way) I went to great lengths to show that wasn't intended, but otherwise I think you have pretty neatly summed up the definition of what a good 'Talkback' site should be as opposed to just some kind of banal question and answer column, I reckon the Editor set it up that way, we are welcome to ask, others are welcome to talk back, but the Editor moderates the answers according to the rules, so guessing I am within his rules on this:)

Any idea where I can get some coal other than outside a petrol station?

Wood burning stoves can be carbon neutral. Growing trees absorb Carbon Dioxide. When wood is burned the carbon dioxide is released back into the atmosphere and absorbed by growing trees. Happy days. 😁
Where there are no trees, then wood burning stoves can contribute to to pollution as the CO2 released will not be absorbed.
Burning wet wood (green or undried wood) and coal can also contribute to harmful emissions. The rule is to burn only properly dried wood from a local supplier - it is far more sustainable and can be carbon neutral.
Burning wood in a stove is currently cheaper per kWh of heat than electricity.

Jay
Well said and factually correct

Good points Jay, for the record it's the local air pollution not the CO2 or ozone I was referring to in ealier post. It doesn't matter if I'm in a minority of 1 though, but it does seem to prove to me (at least) that nobody seems to have a clue what I'm on about, so ironically that makes it more important that I mentioned it! Enjoy!

Green Frontiers are local and source logs locally. Find them on facebook.

I recommend Luffs - good dry logs which are perfect for wood burners. They do soft and hard wood. Great delivery - they take the time to offload the bags where you'd like them to be.
