Talking about things that matter
- Paul Robinson (4th Sep 2005 - 09:20:00)

I am disappointed to note the decline in the quality and content of recent postings notably the thread 'Lurid Liphook. Recent remonstrations about name calling suggest that the site is turning in on itself.

When the correspondents start attacking each other it is beginning to sound like the second half of 'Lord of the Flies'

Surely there are more important subjects that ought to occupy us like housing developements that are planned with little consideration given to the infrastructure that these new residents will require i.e. bigger schools, better roads and medical facilities.

I haven't got anything to say about housing etc., although, of course, they would be interesting subjects to discuss with people who knew what they were talking about.

However, I do agree this website is no longer the friendly, fun and informative community website it used to be. I do miss Freddie's 'voice of reason' and wish he hadn't deserted.

Good point...if we use the site to bring issues to everyone's attention then the next step, in the cases that Paul highlights, is to write letters of complaint and/or objection.

1. Lurid Liphook...here's the address of the Hungry Horse Customer services department so all those that think that the signs outside The Anchor are appauling get writing:
Customer Service Department
Greene King pub company
Abbot House
PO Box 337
Bury St Edmunds
Suffolk
IP33 1QW

2. House building...there is a local plan review at the Millenium Hall on Friday 9th Sept. between 4pm and 8pm and on Saturday 10th September between 10am and 2pm. There's a smaller "exhibition" at the Haskell Centre in Midhurst road on Wednesday 7th Sept to Friday 9th Sept between 10.00am and 1pm and 2pm to 4pm each day. Those who object, let's go along and voice dissapproval and point out the facts about infrastructure.

I have in the past written to the local authority, local press and our MP, about the development of the village including the lack of sufficient infrastructure, school places, doctors surgeries etc. I contacted the HSE when contractors for Sainsburys tore down the asbestos buildings without fully enclosing them and then packaging the asbestos in plastic as promised. (Apparently for the particular 'type' of asbestos, providing it wasn't next to a school, this was OK). Like many I attended many of the meetings prior to the Sainsbury's development and our views were largely ignored......... (Serious enough for you or am I just being a pain?!)

We all know these things are 'more important' than lurid advertising banners but does that mean that these eyesores in our pretty square should be ignored?

(As far as I am aware The Square IS in a conservation area but will have to check.)

Hi, Eneida, Paul and everyone else here -

Sorry you think I've "deserted" the site. Not so, just had a very turbulent year and not been around much - I've been spending more time away from Liphook than living in it.

BUT - I am around more and am back involved with the Parish Council stuff etc. Actually, that's my first task - to get all the Parish Council info on the site updated, as it's badly out of date.

Also hope to persuade the Editor (lovely man :;) to publish a new section here for the Millennium Centre. There's so much more happening there, with lots of groups holding regular sessions. Also some great evenings coming up, with Hog the Limelight shows etc.

One early snippet: the PC is about to decide on purchasing a digital projector for the main Hall at the Centre This will mean we can have our own film evenings with state of the art projection - so we'll have even better facilities than Haslemere Hall. Films can be rented from a central library, so we will no longer have to travel out of Liphook to see recent big films (and the cost of a seat will be a lot less too!). With the improved bar and catering facilities we now have, the Centre is going from strnegth to strength, producing a healty surplus, which is being ploughed back into the community by way of the Community Chest grants - there were four successful applications for 250 pounds each approved only last week.

On Liphook generally, and some of the very negative comments I've seen posted over the last few months: well, it's growing pains. We've seen a lot of families move into Liphook over a short space of time and it always takes time for people to find their feet and get to know and be involved in the community. I'm still amazed at how much I don't know, and I've lived in Liphook for more than 10 years.

So, sorry to have been so quiet and expect to hear more from me (which may or may not be a good thing!!!).

rgds to all

Freddie

Hi Freddie,

Glad to hear you're going to be spending more time on this website!!

I love the idea of being able to see films locally and can think of lots of exciting possibilities, like for instance a season of Jane Austen films....well she is one of Hampshire's own besides being my favourite author :)
