Liphook Carnival 2022
- IGS (13th Jun 2022 - 14:45:04)

Is the Carnival going ahead this year?

Re: Liphook Carnival 2022
- Lesley Hollands (13th Jun 2022 - 15:51:18)

I had heard that this years is going to be the last because not enough people are willing to help and rising cost of insurance.

After such a long tradition and ours being one of the last night time carnivals in the country it seems like a great shame.

Is there anything that can be done to help it continue or has it come to the end of its life?

If you look to the left of this page, you will see they have a website. No mention of your concerns there.

- Karen (14th Jun 2022 - 07:39:50)

Unfortunately the Carnival is not going ahead. A combination of factors but the main problem has been the lack of volunteers to help which means health and safety obligations cannot be met. Also insurance costs and the withdrawal of principle supporters have made the event no longer viable.

One by one the community events of Liphook are dropping off. First the Classic Car day and now the Carnival. I hear the Liphook Bike Ride wasn't very well supported this year either although thankfully Bramshott Open Gardens was a huge success so hopefully that will run on for a while. Also big thank you to the Liphook in Bloom volunteers, lets hope they stick with it.

- er (14th Jun 2022 - 11:23:13)

No big deal, it's just that the community is changing and getting older, plus we are more 'online', still the new cinema looks busy, tea rooms doing well, gardening etc all still very popular as are elderly services, and hopefully with the expanding housing estates more young blood will be drawn in who could help if they aren't too busy working to pay off their £500,000 starter homes, hopefully we get some affordeable housing too as a lot of single families would benefit from coming to a safe community like this, we can't just be full of elderly tea drinkers, rich gardeners and commuters:)

- Ian (14th Jun 2022 - 11:43:49)

It seems to me we are reliant on the oldies to keep the community events going, and they are getting older! Also I don’t think the newbies care much for mucking in, they enjoy the benefits of Liphook life but don’t appear to contribute to the behind the scenes hard work that’s often involved with these events

Re: Liphook Carnival 2022
- ME (14th Jun 2022 - 12:16:41)

Spot on Ian it’s only the oldies that keep our community going but sadly many are getting TOO OLD to the heavy work.

The young people joining our community don’t seem to have any idea about community spirit. They like what is here but have no idea how to help or they just don’t want to, sad.

As you say all they seem to want is a place to lay their heads and have a good time in their spare time. Liphook is a fantastic place to live just needs more people to see it that way.

Re: Liphook Carnival 2022
- Joe (14th Jun 2022 - 13:17:04)

I think you are being a bit hard on young people in most cases
both parents work full time then if they are not too tired in the evening to attend community events would have to pay a babysitter if they are both to attend. Weekends they are busy catching up with washing and housework. As there are not many local jobs now which pay enough for the mortgage huge amounts of travelling are involved.

I'm a bit confused.
Just had a message of Facebook 2 hours ago to say that the carnival is going ahead on 29th October?
Does say it will be the last one so why do you say it's not happening Karen?

Re: Liphook Carnival 2022
- Editor (14th Jun 2022 - 16:48:27)

From Facebook.

Liphook Carnival Committee
"Hi, the Carnival is going ahead this year but this will be the final one. Lesley is correct with her post that we do not have enough support or volunteers for this 120 year tradition to continue.

We were concerned the insurance would be too high but it has just been confirmed we can go ahead and host this years, we hope to see you there!"

So, 29th October has been confirmed as going ahead.

In this case, lets all band together and make Liphook Carnival 2022 a wonderful and fantastically supported event :-)

Hi all
I had heard that this may be the last of the carnivals which would be such a shame
I have done a float in the last three carnivals with the White Joinery floats which have been great fun so I have put myself forward to be on the committee and help out to keep the carnivals going so would be great if other people could do the same
Please let know if you are interested
Thanks Neil

- Jen (15th Jun 2022 - 10:31:11)

It will be sad to see the annual carnival coming to an end, but perhaps it has now had its day. The carnival procession has been gradually diminishing over the last 20 years or so, with each year seeing fewer floats in the procession. There used to be various categories of participants: pubs & clubs, children's groups, businesses etc, with each category attracting several entries, but I think recently there have been very few entrants in each category.

Many of the groups who used to participate in the carnival seem no to longer exist, or perhaps their members are now too elderly to participate in the physical work of constructing and manning a float.

It's interesting, but it seems to be that as the population of Liphook increases, so participation and interest in the carnival diminishes.

Re: Liphook Carnival 2022
- er (15th Jun 2022 - 11:47:24)

Good points Jen, also another sad point is perhaps that most new houses for younger folk no longer have proper gardens or garages, more like a small bit of a backyard with a tiny shed if that, often several houses built where once there was one, we live in a disposable society where no one has space, time or DIY skills to build anything big, if something breaks or we need anything it comes in from Amazon in a cardboard box and is discarded as soon as it breaks one time and a new one is ordered, sad but it's progress I guess!

Hopefully this last one will be well attended and it will revived or carry on in some form or other in a more modern way in future!

Re: Liphook Carnival 2022
- dave (15th Jun 2022 - 12:38:53)

The Carnival in it's current format has sadly gone past its use-by date. The last one was actually quite good and seemed to be better supported although the three before that were quite sad. Hardly any floats and a general sense of disappointment rather than joy.

Hopefully something inclusive and diverse, more representative of the 21st century will be organised in the future which will appeal to the new population dynamics, perhaps an annual Pride or live music event? I also think that even in todays world, a traditional village fete can appeal to both modern and traditional values/preferences and The Millennium Green would be a fantastic venue

Re: Liphook Carnival 2022
- M (15th Jun 2022 - 17:34:37)

Perhaps you could organise something more inclusive and appealing Dave?

Re: Liphook Carnival 2022
- CajunKen (15th Jun 2022 - 19:13:48)

Speaking of village fetes, the Carnival used to put on a family fun day on the green with live music and local stalls to raise interest and money for the carnival. Would love that to come back.

Re: Liphook Carnival 2022
- dave (16th Jun 2022 - 08:37:06)

@ M, perhaps you would be willing to help me? Or if you do not like the idea of an inclusive and appealing event you could volunteer to join the Carnival Committee to ensure its future?

Re: Liphook Carnival 2022
- M (16th Jun 2022 - 17:32:59)

@Dave
Ahh the age old reply of throwing back a question when you have no answer.
How do you know I'm not an active member of the community and already/have volunteered for many organisations and events that take place in our community? ....... such as the Parish Council, Neighbourhood Plan, Carnival Committee, Liphook in Bloom, Bike Ride, submitting Carnival Floats etc etc.
My question to you was could you organise an event, not could I organise an event.

Re: Liphook Carnival 2022
- Resident (17th Jun 2022 - 08:00:39)

You dont need a float lorry, you can walk around - push and pull used to be ? We entered as a group for years and years just 12 or so people, now in 70s and 80s not so easy.

Be sad too see it end, I hope not

Re: Liphook Carnival 2022
- Dave (17th Jun 2022 - 08:40:30)

@M - I suspect I do not have the skills to organise a large scale event but I would certainly be willing to help! Perhaps we could work together as it sounds like you do have the experience and skills?

Re: Liphook Carnival 2022
- M (17th Jun 2022 - 10:41:15)

Dave that's great to hear.
May I suggest you contact the Carnival Committee and volunteer your services, you don't need to have skills just enthusiasm to help out and produce a diverse and appealing event, which it sounds from your previous posts you have and are willing to provide.
You never know you might find me already there and we can do it together.

Re: Liphook Carnival 2022
- Charlie (18th Jun 2022 - 23:07:55)

My son tried many years ago to help on the committee
They were in their ivory towers and didn’t listen to anything he had to say, many of those comments have been mentioned on this thread and previous ones.

The carnival being the last one has been ongoing for several years Now,

Sadly some of the young have to commit to jobs as due to the house prices being so high have to start off asap otherwise their moving totally out do the village, hence the spirit going.

I write this whilst hearing very loud music from the bramshott area
