shopping locally
- WENDY MARTIN (31st May 2022 - 09:41:02)

We always try and shop locally, and when things go wrong, we use local people. Our tumble drier went wrong so we went back to where we bought it and asked them to come and fix it, the engineer was here for less than 10 minutes, there was nothing wrong with the tumble drier, it was a faulty wall plug, for which we have to get a qualified electrician as the engineer wasn't allowed to fix it. For this information and pulling out and putting back the tumble drier, we were charged £85. To say we were shocked is an understatement, especially as we have been dealing with this local firm for 15 years. Do ask before you get someone out, so you can save up to have any faulty appliance mended

£85 for a flat-rate call-out charge does not seem unreasonable to me. You can't expect a business to send an engineer out to a premises without charging a fee, surely? It's unfortunate that the fault was not with the appliance so couldn't be repaired at the time of the call-out. I think if it were, the repair would not have seemed so expensive, as it would have included the call-out fee.

I've encountered some much higher call-out fees than £85. Many companies charge a flat rate call-out plus a further charge for every 15 minutes that the engineer is on site, for example.

£85 is the normal call out fee for any business. I recently had a call out because my dishwasher was not working. £85 for the call out and advice new dishwasher so I paid £85 plus the cost of a new dishwasher which they supplied. You cannot expect engineers to visit premises for nothing even if they cannot fix the problem. It is still their time etc etc. As a matter of interest Wendy what would you have done had you asked what the call out charge would be and been told it was £85?

It may well be the going rate these days but if you haven’t had to have a call out for years it would probably come as a bit of a shock.
