Lurid Liphook
- Uncle Ernie (22nd Aug 2005 - 16:37:56)

For ugly & tacky, the appalling "signs" plastered to shrubbery outside the Anchor has taken some beating; until now, that is.
Even those eyesores pale before the truly disgusting new facade of the Kebab shop opposite HSBC!!
Has anyone seen anything so awful?
Is this a sign of things to come?
Maybe the flower shop will be next with a fetching day-glo pink paint job perhaps?
Or how about one of the estate agents going for zebra stripes?
No wonder HSBC is closing that branch - or so the rumour goes - their staff must feel physically sick every time they look out the window!

The Anchor, the kebab shop...all it needs now is an amusement arcade and a nightclub...with appropriate day-glo signs and advertisements.

Perhaps we should blame one of our local councillors who was quoted in the Liphook Herald some time ago as saying that the 'temporary' signs outside The Anchor would "brighten up Liphook". Personally I think the signs on the roundabout should be removed as they are a distraction to drivers. - (The fact that they look horrible is obviously not enough.)

Blimey! Hats off to the "voice of the people" that this website obviously is!
Took a constitutional up through the village over the weekend and guess what - the kebab shop's been re-painted!
And a rather conservative creamy-type colour at that.
Well done whoever's responsible; now, can you persuade those morons over at the pub to follow suit?

Uncle Ernie,

As this is a community website, i do feel strongly about the use of language towards others.

The term "Morons" is very derogitry (Sp??) and i think, down right rude.

I for one have a very active role at the Anchor, and feel that instead of name calling on a website, you simply just don't go there. I'm sure you will not be missed.

Ben, Can you get those signs taken down then? It would be lovely if you could!

I'm so glad to see this - I was beginning to think I'd been hallucinating when I thought it was green when I drove past it last week!!

I'm with 'Uncle Ernie' on his discription of the Anchor. I have been there - but didn't stay very long due to the overpowering smell of stale chip fat and general grime (sticky tables etc). Although I would have liked to have attended the 'Gig in the Garden' (missed it as I was away) - no stale chip pong and hopefully some good music, I have been put off future events by the arrogance of the organiser in the 'Gig in the Garden' discussions on this site. His 'if you don't like it you won't be missed' attitude (see previous comments) is abundantly clear!

Liz I do agree with you and Uncle Ernie that all the posters that surround The Anchor are tacky and an eyesore.

In fact I complained on this website, a couple of years ago, that since it's a Grade 2 listed building it should be respected and treasured. Didn't do any good - all I got was the usual abuse from the usual people.

It's also a shame about Ben's attitude, we might not be missed if we don't like the posters, but unfortunately we can't avoid 'missing' them.

I know I shouldn't rise to the bait, but just can't help it!

"In fact I complained on this website a couple of years ago, that since its a Grade 2 listed building it should be respected and treasured. Didn't do any good all I got was the usual abuse from the usual people."

Eneida,
Your original posting on the Anchor was dated the 20th January 2004, not including your original post there were 4 replies, one of which was your own. I read it that two of these were supporting your opinion and the remaining one was neither one way or the other.
In no way was there any "abuse" directed at you whatsoever.
This word abuse seems to apply to any person who happens to disagree with any of your opinions of which I hasten to add there are numerous. Whilst this is commendable, when you make sweeping sarcastic statement as per your first posting on the gig in the garden don't get upset when sweeping sarcastic comments come back in your direction.

If you are going to claim "abuse" has been levelled at your postings please check first that this "abuse" actually exists. (20th January 2004).
If you want to complain about abuse check out the "morons" comment on this thread, the question raised here is, does the colour of a building really warrant all this debate and name calling? My opinion NO!

Steve,

Do you get this wound up by everybody or is it just by me??

It's quite flattering really ;)

Re: Lurid Liphook
- liz (2nd Sep 2005 - 10:43:16)

Steve - the discussion now is about the Anchor (keep up!). The Kebab shop has already been made to repaint as the lurid green was deemed unsuitable for the village centre. Why then is the Anchor allowed to keep its ugly and distracting 'Hungry Horse' advertisements?

On the subject of the village centre - I hear BT is to replace the traditional red telephone box with a more modern version. - A pity. Many villages have beeen able to keep the traditional box - why not Liphook?

I know I sound like an old stick in the mud, but I am working on the premise that the traditional look of the square is worth keeping as far as possible.

- Eneida (2nd Sep 2005 - 15:14:10)

Liz,

If they're really going to replace the old red phone box with a modern one I think we should start a campaign to stop it !!

Do you know if the Square is a conservation area ?

Well isn't this the way that "hoodie yobs" behave???

Just because i'm of the younger generation, please don't stereotype me.

I happen to be quite nice actually. I own my own bussines, drive a nice car, been working in the real world for many years now.

I get it all the time though (even from a few members of the parish councill - no names)

oh well......

Re: Lurid Liphook

Ben

Reading through the various correspondence I cannot see how you feel you have been 'typecast'. I for one do not know any of the people who have made comments on this site and have no idea of their ages. I assume this is true of most commentators.
