Gig In The Garden
- Ben Lawrance (8th Aug 2005 - 10:12:16)

Hi All,

We are now less then a week away from "Gig In The Garden" at the Royal Anchor.

The line up has been sorted, the BBQ and Hogroast ordered, and the grass has been mowed.

Full steam ahead for Saturday.

Hope you can all come. It should turn out to be a great night.

Re: Gig In The Garden
- Sue (15th Aug 2005 - 14:08:02)

And what a great night it was - despite the occasional downpours of rain. Thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Thanks to the organisers, musicians, sound/lighting engineers and all who took part to make it such a successful event. More please! Only fly in the ointment was having to wait up to 20 minutes (or more) to be served at the bar!

Just heard from a friend that they could hear every word of the music? in Haslemere!!! Thank God the wind was in the opposite direction to the Headley Road ;) Didn't hear a sound.

Hi Sue

Glad you had a great evening. Thank you for your kind words, i'll pass them on to the rest of the crew who worked with me.

Don't worry, there will be more. Definatly next year, but working on doing something similar (not nessecarily at the Anchor though) before then.

If any one is interested in getting involved in something similar to Gig In The Garden, give me an e-mail (prefably to donate money to a good cause)

Hope you all had a good time.

I heard it was brilliant, so am a little ticked off i missed it. Pity there wasn't a live stream i could watch or some video footage to download.

Any chance it could be done every quarter instead of every year? It would a very good thing for Liphook to get a name for....

Re: Gig In The Garden
- LippyChick (22nd Aug 2005 - 22:41:29)

Your alternative Alex, would be to live somewhere near the Haslemere Road.

Living more than half a mile away I could hear every note, and every word. This included some pretty reprehensible language. All this audible indoors with the windows closed :(

Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti events like this, in fact, had the weather been more clement I'd probably have been there myself, but when the next event is organised, perhaps some consideration will be taken towards Liphook residents who don't actually want to hear?

Re: Gig In The Garden
- hazlerl (24th Aug 2005 - 15:24:05)

God wasn't it dire being forced to hear a worse rendition of covers than you would hear if you had gone to a karaoke bar! If it hadnt been so noisy it was laughable the quality of the music! It kept all little ones awake and ruined Saturday night for us adults! I had hoped the rain would have called a halt to it! How sad it was to see a picture of a young child at the event which would have attracted just the kind of people in liphook we don't want to attract, and who would have been subjected to quite literally deafening music, smoke and drunken louts. Advance warning if this is going to be repeated please and we will definitely go away. What is Liphook becoming.....?!

Re: Gig In The Garden
- Steve Read (24th Aug 2005 - 17:42:16)

Ben,
Glad to hear the evening was a success, couldn't make it myself was away.
Hope it becomes an a regular slot in the calender. Forget the negative postings on here by those trying to put a bigger damper on the event than the weather.
Anything different, out of the norm for this place and out they come. Go for it for next year give them all plenty of notice so they can plan to go out for the evening and turn the volume up!
Regards, Steve.

Re: Gig In The Garden
- Alex Cameron (25th Aug 2005 - 01:31:09)

LC - from what i hear, you are a beautiful young lady? Very surprising you were in on a Saturday night, let alone unhappy with the volume :)

Unbelievable. They whinge about abusive young people, despite understanding they are bored senseless. Then you give disaffected youth something to focus on (instead of throwing up on the pavement or attacking others at the station) and they whinge about the noise. And as for notice, don't try that one - its been posted up here and numerous other places.

I should imagine this would be tricky to pull off in a more remote area (no alcohol, need car etc), and i'm sure the experience has shown the organisers a thing or two that they could do better.

What a great thing for the village to be known for (live music) - real music has been dying a slow death in recent years thanks to the onslaught of pop crap, samples, covers, synthesised instruments and computer-based production.

Now let's make it a lot more often (busker nights at the links anyone?), encourage the bands, and damn well integrate it with broadband! Yes, Mr LiphookMusic.co.uk editor! Stream this stuff live and on-demand!

Re: Gig In The Garden
- S (25th Aug 2005 - 09:30:54)

I'm fed up of hearing this same old excuse of youth bad behaviour. 'They are bored senseless'. Why the hell are they bored senseless?

There is far more to do nowadays then when I was a kid and I was never bored. They are bored cos they spend half their lives sitting infront of the TV or their Xboxes and never interacting with anyone other than perhaps Gordon Freeman. Then when they reach 16/17/18 they go straight to the pub and drink, shout, scream, harass, fight and vandalise. You don't learn respect for people and property by kicking the hell out of it in Half Life 2/Doom or whatever.

This is why we are doing so badly in athletics and other professional sports. Why go out to the rec and play football when you can pretend to be Thierry Henry on the PS2 instead eating pizza and getting so physically out of shape you couldn't do it anyway? Then mummy in the 4x4 will drive them 100 yards to school in case something happens to them. Something that is no more likely to happen according to official statistics as it was prior to world war I.

Ahhhh I feel better now, I'll get on with some work.

Re: Gig In The Garden
- Eneida (25th Aug 2005 - 11:02:56)

Strange isn't it that the 2 people most wanting Liphook to become 'known' for deafning, live music, don't (as far as I know) actually live in Liphook ;) ;)

Re: Gig In The Garden
- Alex Cameron (25th Aug 2005 - 11:10:54)

S - can completely understand your frustration on that. I'm sure there are a number of factors, a few of which you suggest.

Personally i think we forget what it's like to be young all too easily - kids in this day and age are living in a very different world compared to the one we grew up in. Is it surprising that we see an increase in 'acting out' behaviour as the nanny state increases its reach and technology separates us from others?

Bear in mind that options are limited for an evening out - most 'activities' (if you could summise it as such) need you to travel somewhere else, such as Guildford and/or Portsmouth, either by car or train. Music has the potential to lift many people from dark places into a fulfilling and rewarding adult life - whether that be simply empathising with the way they feel or actually providing income.

Re: Gig In The Garden
- Steve Read (25th Aug 2005 - 18:32:29)

Strange!

Not really, lived in Liphook for 47 years, went to school in Liphook, my business is in Liphook. In the carnival as a kid more times than I can remember in Liphook. Played football (or attempted to play) for Liphook. Run youth teams and senoir teams in Liphook. Involved in fund raising for charities in Liphook. Both my children have attended school in Liphook. Pay my community charge and business rates based on Liphook. Vote in Liphook. Entitled to my opinion in Liphook. You bet!
(Liphook to be known for loud defening music) one night out of 365, laughable really.
One consolation I don't have the aroma of a fish & chip shop and litter along the pavement (as far as I know).

Re: Gig In The Garden
- H (25th Aug 2005 - 19:11:36)

We live very close to the pub and could not block out the noise all night. It is not very considerate to those who live close by or who have young children - we had all the windows shut and tv on and still the noise came through.

I would not like this to become a regular event as it is too loud and too close to housing.

Re: Gig In The Garden
- Dick (25th Aug 2005 - 21:36:42)

What is this.... a village of monks all adhering to a vow of silence..?
Something different has happened in the village and we have people complaning about the volume !!!
It was young musicians playing their thing, not a quintet of chamber pot musicians playing quietly in the background while we all had tiffin...

I have heard mixed reports about this nights entertainment but at least we have had someone bring a new idea to the village.

Whatever your opinions, lets give credit to those, espescially Ben, for actually having the balls to promote a different theme.

OK, so it was noisy... music generally is..
Good / Bad... music generally is..
young louts / old louts.. music generally attracts all..

Come on Liphook, lets try and support something new, lets not get stuck in the dark ages whereby we should be seen and not heard.

Well done BEN & CO for giving up your time to promote what could be an annual affair.

Having said that, I am still a little bit miffed that i didn't get a slot playing my recorder.......!!!

Re: Gig In The Garden
- Steve Read (25th Aug 2005 - 23:27:28)

Dick,

Careful there mate you live about the same distance from the Anchor as I do!
Come to think of it, do you live in Liphook?

Re: Gig In The Garden
- Ben Lawrance (26th Aug 2005 - 00:54:05)

Thanks for every one's comments.

Just a quick note about the noise being inconsiderate to others in the village. There are 8760 hours in a year, we were only "noisey" for 5 of those.

Now, i don't wish to cause a stir, but i'm sure that sleeping children will do just fine with the other 8755.

Thanks Steve for you comments (not just cause you gave me Player of the year!!!)

There will DEFINATLEY be another one at some point, so this is officail notice of it. Don't know when it will be yet, but it WILL happen.

As for the bad language used at my event, i do apologise to every one, but i can not control what comes out of people's mouths.

Thank you to every one who enjoyed it. If you didn't then i hope you will next time.

What makes you think I was talking about you?? Why on earth would I know where someone like you lives?

Steve,
Actually, I live in the Suburbs...................

Once again, well done Ben.

Re: Gig In The Garden
- Steve Read (26th Aug 2005 - 18:11:38)

Like I said laughable!

Re: Gig In The Garden
- H (28th Aug 2005 - 00:54:11)

I don't think it is unreasonable to mention the noise level - I am not criticising the even itself. I also think some people on here do not allow other people to have an opinion different to their own.

It is also not particularly useful to say that it was only noisy for 5 hours - that is actually quite a long time if it is right next to your house. I am not the only person with these views and that does not make me a monk!

I do not insult other poeple on here and would appreciate it if my views were also allowed to be heard without being made to look stupid by the person running the even and being belittled by certain other individuals.

Thanks.

Re: Gig In The Garden
- Dick (28th Aug 2005 - 23:19:58)

H.
No one is belittling you and I would not dream of insulting anyone on this web site.

However, you argue that you are not allowed your opinion.

We have read your opinion which you are entitled to, but you must also accept that others have an opinion as well.

Re: Gig In The Garden
- LippyChick (29th Aug 2005 - 12:00:39)

Well said H

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and everyone has a different perspective. Whilst Eneida living closer to the Anchor than I had a lovely peaceful evening, we were let down by the prevailing winds at our end of the village.

I also don't think it's unreasonable to mention the noise, although what I was most miffed by was the swearing. Please don't misunderstand me, I'm delighted that The Anchor held a live music event and positively bursting with enthusiasm for the young people who are making such a success of it (particularly Davros, a local group who are going from strength to strength).

Ben, I'm sure that you could ask performers at future events to curb their language if you wanted to. Hats off to you and your team for working so hard to produce the gig although you could maybe take the constructive criticism with slightly better grace. Perhaps you could consider it a learning curve in order to make future events an even better success?

Re: Gig In The Garden
- Eneida (29th Aug 2005 - 14:21:55)

I suppose this is a question for Ben really, as I didn't go and don't know anything about staging such events, but is it strictly necessary to hold them outdoors?

What about the Millennium Hall, wouldn't that be a compromise? A sort of Gig in the Hall...

Re: Gig In The Garden
- Ben Lawrance (29th Aug 2005 - 18:50:18)

Having a gig inside is all very do-able. Yes, but the event was for the Anchor. I can't see people being at the LMH (sorry LMC) and going to the Anchor for a drink.

Plus, I can't quite see 300 odd people cramming into the LMH (sorry i did it again. LMC) and better yet queing at the bar. We had a huge problem at the bar at the Anchor (which is about 5/6 times bigger)

Plus, LMC (i'm getting the hang of it now) has no stage, if you hire stage in, the the lighting rig is too low. The stage area is too small. The lighting rig is rubbish, the acoustics even worse. All in all, not an ideal place to hold a gig.

Bohunt sports hall i hear people shout. Yes it would be easy to put my rig into the sports hall, and yes it holds lots of people, but Bohunt's rule book is so long that there's no point even starting to think about holding it there.

Village Hall: Too Small. No Bar.

I have thought long and hard for a place (both indoor and out) for the next one, so that it doesn't disturb too many people, but the only place i can come up with is outside. Sorry.

If any one can tell me of a place local to Liphook (walking distance) that holds 300 odd people, has a large area for a bar, not too near people with sleeping children, oh, and is indoors. Please let me know.

Re: Gig In The Garden
- Mike Grimes (30th Aug 2005 - 10:11:01)

Ben might not be able to see it but I find the image of 300 odd people crammed into the LMC mildly amusing.

Just how far can an odd person walk? I suspect not very far, in which case the search is for somewhere near houses that is not near houses. I suspect this is Ben's point.

One last observation, if the do-gooders had let the Royal Anchor build houses in their garden the 'green lung' of Liphook would not have been able to breathe that night.

Re: Gig In The Garden
- katy (30th Aug 2005 - 16:46:56)

Just read all your comments with interest. I was one of the many people at the event who thoroughly enjoiyed the evening and am looking forward to the next. I live in the centre of the village and am all for live entertainment and events in Liphook. I am too old to consider myself a lager lout and believe I am a respectable member of the community so feel slightly upset that certain people on this site seem to think all people that attended the event were drunken young louts. As someone who attended I can assure you that the event was well run, the music was turned off at 11pm, and safety and security were paramount. I can also report that the "youths" all behaved themselves! Its a pity more of you did not support this event prior to making negative comments on this site but c'est la vie.

PS I am looking forward to the carnival too, despite the noisy fireworks and the closure of the village centre roads;)

- rob (30th Aug 2005 - 22:47:38)

Is this the same Ben Lawrance whose father was so closely associated with the building of the white elephant we've come to know fondly as the millenium thing? I think we should be told.

Re: Gig In The Garden
- G (19th Sep 2005 - 09:51:54)

Just caught up with all the comments here - oh dear! All those whingers out there complaining about a few hours of 'noise' for one evening out of the year and the dear little kiddies not being able to sleep. With bonfire night and Christmas looming - spare a thought for all those disturbed evenings we (adults) are going to suffer with possibly the same dear kiddies banging on our doors trick or treating .............. and the Christmas carolling to follow. BAH HUMBUG!
