Wildlife
- Guy (4th May 2022 - 12:17:49)

I wonder if it is Sainsburys or council contractors hacking everything back without a care for nature. Isn't it illegal to trim hedges after the end of April for nesting birds? And what about 'no mow May'? How very sad, thoughtless and unnecessary

What a shame liphook look’s lovely all the beautiful flower beds that LIB maintain that are spoiled by unkempt grass verges. The grass hasn’t been cut all year by EHDC or HCC the Parrish grounds men are doing a very good job tidying up all round. When they do get round to cutting it will be such a mess with very long grass everywhere. It’s jubilee year so we should be making our village look lovely LIB are working very hard to do just that so we all should lend a hand and do our bit .

Agree Guy. We’re participating in “no mow May” to help the wildlife thrive

It is not illegal to trim hedges. It is however illegal to disturb or destroy nests, birds, eggs etc (Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, Schedule 1). So in theory the contractors at sainburies must check the hedges before they trim them. If they free of nests than they can go ahead. If they are a reputable company they will be aware of the relevant legislation.
As far as verges go I love all the wildflowers that come up. It won't be long before the council come and cut down all the lovely cuckoo pint along Haslemere Road and all the daisy's etc etc (which our declining pollinators need to thrive) and leave it looking barron and brown.

Each to their own but I think the overgrown grass verges around the village do look a mess.
Some people put a lot of effort into their front gardens, trimming grass, cutting hedges, planting flowers and all to nowt when the EHDC public areas look like they do, not to say the hard work that Liphook in Bloom do to help brighten up our environment.
EHDC no mow May is just for some specific open spaces within the District, not a blanket no grass cutting.
There is a place for wild flower areas but I don't think grass verges within built up areas is the place. The reduction in verge/grass cutting smacks of money saving to me. Just waiting until they do cut the grass, it will be a complete mess of dead and rotting vegetation blowing around the village.

Totally agree with M it makes such a mess when they do cut the verge’s which outweighs everything. It has to be cleared up by volunteers which we are very short of . Long grass and wild flowers in the right place very good. It’s a shame there is so many weeds out side some shops we should all take pride in our lovely village. A big thank you to LIB and all the volunteers for making the village look fantastic.
