Beavers (the ones that live in lakes - not scout huts)
- local resident (10th Apr 2022 - 18:49:35)

Hello folks

There doesn't appear to be a 'Haslemere Talkback' so here goes:

I recently visited the valley where beavers have been reintroduced (south of Haslemere)

It's a fascinating project - how can I find out more about it? I can't find anything on the web etc.

Thanks

I believe that it is an enclosure on National Trust property and was licenced by Natural England. There was newspaper articles about it so there should be information online.

Try surrey wildlife trust website, also I think they have some information on it at the Haslemere museum.
I’d love to see them myself but I thought they were keeping the location a bit secret. I’d like to know if beavers would benefit the water voles, I haven’t seen one since the 90’s

My original post is unclear - I actually visited the beaver enclosure/park/area. (Not sure what the correct word is...!)

I just wanted to find out more - what was happening, how it was going, if it needed support etc.

Nothing like this on the web, as my OP indicates.

The release etc is not remotely a secret, per se - but for sure the Trust is not actively promoting it. For all sorts of good reasons.

Maybe you are using the wrong search engine ! There is info online - the South Downs Website popped up with info as well. Try using Blackdown in your search request online.

Ah yes...! Maybe I am 'using the wrong search engine'. I keep meaning to ditch Netscape - now I have the perfect excuse. Lol.

Nope - I can't find what I am after online, apart from generic stuff, or info dating from 2021.

No biggie, as the kids say. I shall just keep visiting the area - it is a stunning part of the world - and talk to local people etc.

Cheers, folks!

@Local Resident - There is an intentionally very low public profile for the project, as the very last thing that the team would want is people attempting to visit the area.
I would urge you please to give the area a wide berth. Most people don't know the exact location and that's how it should remain.

As I said in my original post: 'I recently visited the valley where beavers have been reintroduced (south of Haslemere)'. Clearly, I am not able to 'un-visit'/give the area a ‘wide berth’. There are signs up all around the beaver enclosure saying what it is. The enclosure itself is an extraordinary 'installation'. If I wasn't so fascinated with the project, I would use the word 'intrusive' to describe it.

I'm a twitcher - I know about the lengths that conservation authorities go to conceal nesting sites for endangered birds like golden eagles and marsh harriers. This is not what is happening here. I see no reason why an informed, interested local resident should not seek to understand what is happening with this project. Not least because of the potentially critical impact it has on the local environment. Seeing how these animals take down trees was in itself pretty mind blowing. So, I shall retain my interest in this project and in this part of my locality.

Interestingly, when I was there, two sets of people entered the enclosure - some lads with a shovel, and then an older gent with a spade. No idea what they were doing.

I am minded to suggest that this was connected to 'County Lines'.

This is a JOKE.

This thread is now officially closed. By me.

I sense a flounce emoji! Perhaps you could just pursue your enquiries with the people who started the project. It is no good venting to strangers on here.

Lecture at Haslemere museum on 19th may by hindhead and blackdown supporters group about beavers and associated natural water defences.
