Help digitising some video ...
- Finchie (28th Jul 2005 - 22:57:01)

A plea for help. Has anyone got a Sony Digital8 Camcoder ? I need to digitise about 10 minutes of video footage for use in court as evidence (don't ask !) which I took on an old Sony Hi8 camera. I believe the digital 8 cameras can automatically convert into something digital I can cut to CD using the Hi8 tape I have.

I could buy one, but trying to avoid a) going digital and b) forking out !!!

Or Alex - if you have some clever card thingie that can do the same - it must be worth a few beers & a curry ?

Cheers, Finchie

Hi Finchie

The quickest and easiest way to digitise from a tape like that is to use the cables that come with a camcorder for connecting it to the TV. Instead of connecting to the TV, you connect it to a graphics and/or video card on the back of a PC which then records it in the format you want it in.

If you haven't got access to a camera to play the tape through, you might be in a bit of a sticky situation and will need to visit a professional video services company to get it put onto DVD. Should take a few hours at the very most and be a fairly modest charge.

If you do have the camera and an AV cable to play it through the TV, you need to connect the video lead (usually yellow) and the 2 stereo audio leads (usually red and white) into the back of a PC video card and import the footage into a video-editing program like Adobe Premiere. You could get Brad at Habit Solutions to do it or a friend or two of mine might be able to help.

Personally speaking i'm travelling a lot at the moment, so won't be in Liphook much i'm afraid! Always happy to help on email etc though.

Hi Alex - thanks for the help. I'll try Habit Solutions first and see how that goes ...

Cheers, Finchie

Hi Finchie

I've got an old Hi8 camcorder and a DVD recorder (TV / VCR style), the two can be connected analogue only (ie not digital).

This will do what you want with out the need to get the video onto a computer first.

Call me on 01428 727437 if you still need assistance.

Alan
