Gas meters

We get our gas supply from British gas. Yesterday, a friend in the area said they had gone to check their gas meter but the meter count was blank. We checked ours and it is also blank. We are told to expect a huge increase in costs, but it would appear we now no longer have the means to check our own usage. Anyone else have this? How can this be allowed?
I will follow up with the response from British Gas if and when they send one.

Hi,
I had a blank meter not long ago and it was a battery inside that had died and therfore the screen display did not show. Unfortunately for me, the blank screen also meant for some reason it cut my gas supply too. Had to wait a week with no heating or hot water. They had to.replace the meter in the end.

I had the same problem [with Ovo] so phoned them. I was eventually given that day's reading over the phone which I've recorded in my diary.
