Possible pollution:River Wey
- The River Wey Trust (30th Mar 2022 - 15:05:33)

Please be advised that we have reported a possible pollution incident on the River Wey at Radford Park to The Environment Agency.
The normal clear water is now extremely cloudy.
The Environment Agency are now investigating.

Also being discussed on Haslemere facebook page.

“I am not sure if it is alright that basically water at camelsdale little river is absolutely dirty coming from road area? Do we need to report it somewhere? Many thanks“

“Could be the builders on wey hill washing cement and debris into the drains and it’s working it’s way down? I am probably wrong but just a thought.
Doesn’t look good 😩”

“The building site was pumping dirty water down there last Friday morning”

Could possibly be burst water main near Weyhill railway bridge.

River Wey pollution Liphook

Chemical poisonous interaction or not, illegal effluence or not, - the cloudiness of the water itself would have detrimental consequence for the river's ecology.

It looked awful all day but seems clear now. Has the cause now been identified and action being taken?

Our water was brown yesterday and the water company had opened the water main to flush it out. The water was flowing into the River Wey in Passfield.

Are we sure this cloudiness isn't just air bubbles similar to what we have coming out of our taps sometimes when compressed air is injected into the system to increase the pressure? The cloudiness in our taps clears after a few minutes. The browness mentioned was commonplace years ago, never did us any harm. I think it's just rust, good source of iron which as our blood is iron based ain't a bad thing.

The last respondent saying "brown water was iron and never did me any harm" is far too complacent. I'd rather he said "never did me any perceived/known harm".

Water pollution can be obvious by the discolouration or foam on top. It can be far less obvious and possibly more dangerous e.g. lead pipes leaching lead into drinking water in old water supply systems.

The point I'm making is that pollution has to be measured by experts with scientific instruments. Obvious pollution can wipe out the base of the food chains and sterilise rivers and streams. Less obvious pollution can do the same.

We must all care for the environment and it's wild life. Our own well bing depends on it....and please don't forget any polluting substance - oil, paint, brake fluid, detergents, fertilisers, cement washings, insecticides, herbicides, sewage etc etc will eventually end up in water courses and can badly damage streams and rivers.

Think twice - anything suspended/dissolved in water will work its way downhill and end up in waterways. Lots of little polluters can end up in one big pollution problem.

Brown water was iron and never did me any perceived/known harm.

I wondered a similar thing D, excessive floating pollen is sometimes confused with pollution but I think it was caused by the burst water main in Wey hill. They had quite a flood so all sorts of residues could have run in, hopefully nothing too nasty and hopefully our beautiful brown trout population unharmed.
As for brown water, if you grew up with steel pipes then it’s all perfectly normal, good source of vitamins!

So we live near the River Wey and have just noticed very murky looking water coming out of the taps....
Does anyone know what could be causing this?

- er (1st Apr 2022 - 19:13:35)

Same here Clare, concerning looking yellowy/brownish and I could be paranoid, but I thought my tea tasted a little bitter, colour seems to have cleared up somewhat after I ran the taps though.

Ours looks to have cleared up now too ;-)

Clare, believe me, the water coming out of your taps does not come from the River Wey.
