PV Solar Panels - info wanted
- Sharon (25th Aug 2011 - 21:27:49)

Hi, I've been saying for years that solar panels would be a good idea, but I have never done anything about it. I would like to know more about them, but am reticent to call out one of the companies that send out fliers - as I expect they are salesmen who will bend your ear for 2 hours and ask you to sign the 'valid for today only' deal (like the double glazing salesmen of old!).

So, in order to start my fact-finding mission, I am posting here first! Has anyone had them installed? Are grants still available? Does it really take 18 years for them to pay for themselves, just as they are due for renewal? How much longer will you be paid for you excess electricity generated?

Any information gratefully received!

Try Adam at Reenergise in Grayshott on 01428 608462. They specialise in this and they don't pressure sell.

I can recommend you call Eco Solar Choices based in Waterlooville. These are a small, family based concern who did not give me the 'hard sale, but were able to give me all the information I need to decide which system would fit my budget and be the most beneficial to me! I spoke to Simon and his mobile number is 07766 691361. Certainly worth a call!

If you can find the capital, it's much better to buy your own system than to use the Government-sponsored scheme. That way, you get 100% of the benefit instead of getting only a paltry handout from the installer who remains the owner of your system.

Wickes are now offering PV systems (and solar water heating systems) at a fixed price which includes installation; no messing about with dodgy sales tactics!

You can get a tax-free return of 9-10% each year, for 25 years from a company like Engensa - http://www.engensa.com - and you should have paid back your initial investment after the first 10 years.

There are also free schemes available where you can have the solar panels for free and save money on your electricity bills but you do not get the tax-free return each year.

There are a lot of drawbacks to going through companies as have recently been highlighted on radio 4. Firstly the income from elecrticity is going to be heavily cut due to government cutbacks on the scheme the solar panel companies are losing their subsidies soon so they are signing up people now, you have to sign a contract with them, they own the electricity and you have to agree to have the panels up for at least 25 years, so you could not sell your house easily unless it was to a person wanting panels. The promised return is only 10 percent surely of any electricity sales, which is not much on one house.

I have photovoltaic panels on my roof which have been generating electricity for about 4yrs now. Would be quite happy to talk to you about them if you want to contact me via the ed. The company I used were called Rayotec and they were very pleasant to deal with.
