TERRORISM
- Eneida (10th Jul 2005 - 12:04:07)
For those of us who grew up in the 1970's the events of 7/7 bring a terrible sense of deja-vu. I remember spending most of that decade being evacuated from various buildings and public places all over England. All false alarms, thank goodness, but still frightening at the time.
That feeling of unease at being in a crowded, confined, place has never quite left me. And now the whole, rotten, scenario is starting all over again and a new generation will be left feeling like that - it just makes me sooooo angry!
However, I must ask the question, is the mass media coverage wise? Terrorists crave publicity more than anything else - should we be giving them so much of it?

I had been led to believe that some of the images were to be kept off of the front pages (e.g. the bus which seems to be the sort of lasting image that the terrorists want to have broadcast) but that didn't happen.
It would seem wise to try and play down the effects somewhat but just as one, unfortunately, cannot suppress the sort of freedom of speech that goes on during some of the more radical Muslim meetings in this country where people are "called to arms to destroy the infidel", one cannot entirely prevent the media from covering these stories in the way that they wish. Perhaps the idea behind portraying so much destruction and loss of life so graphically (and in some cases so sensationally) will make us all the more determined to expedite the repression of this sort of terrorism. I hope that the outrage caused by "showing it as it is" will have the affect of making people even more determined to oppose and fight it both here and abroad.

I understand what you are saying Chris, that 'showing it as it is' might make people so outraged they will be even more determined to fight terrorism.
But it's a tricky one - my concern is that in the mind of these terrorists (as far as I can understand them) they see pictures of 'infidels' suffering from their actions spread across the world's press as victories, so it could incite them to more and more atrocities.

Many people will be thinking that an innocent Brazillian was killed by police at Stockwell last week.
The policemen involved were reacting to a situation.
A situation that caused the deaths of 52 random individuals (which included a work colleague of mine)
A further situation that might have caused many more deaths, had it not (thankfully) failed.
A situation that terrorised most of London (although many did not, outwardly, show it)
Mr Menezes was an unfortunate victim, but not of the police.

I've heard so many conflicting versions of the death of Jean Charles de Menezes that I'm going to keep an open mind until the result of the enquiry comes out.
What does concern me is that there is so much widespread anger in Brazil now! It all plays into the hands of the terrorists just at a time when all countries who despise terrorism should be united. (I was going to say all Christian countries, but sadly, that might be thought un-PC).

The mistake, in this case, seems to manifest itself in letting the man get as far as he did because the house from which he exited was apparently under surveilance for some time before he left it. Better to confront the suspect as soon as he becomes a suspect and in this case it could have been done during his walk along relatively quiet streets.
Hindsite is a wonderful thing!

Well I can't really keep an open mind on the death of Jean Charles anymore. Now that a lot of the actual truth has been leaked out, the whole tragedy seems to be a complete shambles that need never have happened.
I don't know who's to blame, but I suppose ultimately the 'buck' stops at the very top.
