Liphook Square Cleaning
- PeterW (9th Aug 2011 - 22:33:13)

Having just managed to stop laughing and wipe the tears from my eyes after Mr Paul Robinsons pompous letter to the Royal Anchor pub about the amount of litter in the square caused by the said establishment I would like to point out out that the 2 pictures showing the detrius that covers the square caused by the Anchor pub where taken in May and one of the pictures showed a branded beer glass not sold by the Anchor. I would point out that the whole of the Anchor site is cleaned and checked every dayfor empty glasses and broken bottles.

I would ask that was a similar letter sent to the Green Dragon and the Links and also was something along the same lines sent to the local takeaways about the preponderance of polystyrene containers that litter the Longmoor Road and, I presume, other roads in the vicinity over the weekend, which seems to start on Wednesday and continues on til the following Tuesday.

Finally whilst I understand the underlying cause of the letter, what is the councillor doing abour the fag ends, biro and broken paving shown in the pictures sent to the Anchor and hopefully some other establishments in the area.

My final thought is, having taken the pictures and dated and placed them why did he not pick them up and return to the point of origin?

Peter

I think any effort that the parish council are making to deal with the litter problem in The Square should be commended and not criticised, and I am sure that The Anchor is not being targetted as the only detritus contributor!

Well done parish council I say!

Peter W,
I couldn't agree with you more. The pomposity of the new-elected Councillors knows no bounds.
I was in the audience at the meeting when Cllr Robinson bored me rigid with this motion and his idea of writing to businesses which support local events, seemed ill-founded and likely to upset all of you. Clearly it has.
ILike yourself I couldn't stop laughing as he skipped around the Hall distributing photographs of discarded rubbish. Quite frankly, had it been Christmas the audience might have shouted "He's behind you!"
Keep up the good work, Peter.
We'll have a beer soon.
Hamish.

My husband regularly does a litter pick between the square and the post office. Perhaps if Peter and Hamish chose somewhere to do a regular litter pick in the village there would be nothing for the counciller to comment on.

I would expect any decent local businesses (and individuals) to support an anti-litter campaign.

If you're going to moan about litter, why not send a letter to McDonalds in petersfield aswell, we always seem to end up with litter from there but thats 20 minute drive away.....

It's not down to certain establishments, it's down to the lack of bins in the area. The area's that are most clean tend to be the ones that actually have propper bins.

Liz,
Get a life, you must be a newbee, everybody does their bit for this village clearing up after events, and whilst walking around our beautiful streets. what is not needed (in my mind) is pompous letters distributed to local companies that support the village( in every sense of the word) telling them that they are the main perpertrators of the mess signed by the parish council.I fear single handedly the council could force the businesses to leave our great village (I would if I were them)

Graeme

Good grief!! Why would you not be in favour of an anti-litter campaign! I'm not responsible for so called 'pompous letters' nor am I blaming any individual establishments but it is a good initiative. Any responsible people would not take offence. No, I'm not a 'newby' but I'm not sure why that is in any way relevant.

I think a few of the comments made on this thread are a little below the belt. If someone has actually got off their backside to join the parish council, and then is actively making efforts to improve our village, I really don't feel such criticism is deserved.

The parish council clearly have many issues they need to address, and litter is just one of these. I am sure that no-one is naive enough to believe that a few businesses are wholly responsible for any litter problem, but surely this recent action is a start?

On various threads in the past there have been calls for occasional litter picks and complaints about litter, so for the parish council to start taking action is a really positive move. The very fact that there were photos showing discarded rubbish kind of implies there is a problem!

Dear Friends, Neighbours and Enemies,

Talkback is an excellent way of getting things off your chest, but we are again descending to picking at how things are said and missing the point of why they are said.

Litter is a problem. The Parish Plan 3 likes 3 hates form shows that many do think it is a problem.

So what are the solutions?

The new PC, whilst some may not approve of the manner are attempting to do something. In parallel if any have got some good ideas for inclusion into our Parish Plan, please send them to me.

simon.cooper110@btopenworld.com

put "litter" in the Subject, please.

As ever, Simon

Simon can we please have a copy of your '3 likes 3 hates' form to put on liphook.co.uk

Dear Ed,

Yup good idea and thanks. Had other requests too.

I am expecting a web and email friendly version imminently.

I agree that we should help keep Liphook clean and if you see people dropping litter in the street ask them politely to pick it up. I do not think it matters where it is it is still an eyesore. Litter in the countryside is just as bad. People just throw things into the hedgerows from their car s.

Read this thread with a smile on my face. "Dammed if you do and dammed if you don't" comes to mind.

LBPC should be applauded for at least trying to do something and I think we should all back them in their attempts to improve Liphook and it's environs.

Liphook residents, if you feel passionate about the look of you own village then do something about it. If everyone took 5 minutes of their time to pick up any litter from their own boundaries, and further afield if possible, then litter wouldn't be such a problem.
5 minutes a couple of times a week is all it takes, don't think it's someone elses job, make it your own and feel good about yourself and contibute to a nicer place to live for everyone.

Just a thought??? ;-)

graeme
being your usual 'cheery and positive' self I see!

Honestly, if Councillors don't do enough - you moan. When they do things - you moan.

Perhaps we should start a 'We love litter' campaign?

Re: Liphook Square Cleaning
- Peterw (13th Aug 2011 - 12:45:47)

As i started this thread I thought that perhaps an answer was in order.
I do pick up litter as part of the Liphook in Bloom planting and weeding weekends.
I was not trying to put mr Robinson down but he tone of the letter was a bit 'its your fault' and do something about it!
I did stand for election as mentioned but unfortunately was not elected, so still have an interest on what is happening in our village and surrounding areas.
Sorry if anybody took offence but the tone of the leter had to be read to be believed. In a small community like ours isn't a friendly word about a problem much better than a letter out of the blue?

Re: Liphook Square Cleaning
- Eneida (13th Aug 2011 - 15:38:47)

I welcome all initiatives by the Council, or anybody else, to address the litter problem in the Square and Liphook in general....

And do my "5 minutes" almost every day, picking up all sorts of rubbish from my front garden. Some people seem to think it's an alternative bin on their way down the Headley Road :(
