I thought she was Canadian! with Chinese and Romanian parents! Nationality is confusing today, reminds me of those other ‘English’ sports stars, Zola Budd and Lennox Lewis

She moved to this country when she was 2 from Canada and is a British citizen with a British passport.

Hi,
Now U.S. Open champion Emma is British, and lived in England since the age of two.

Re Zola, that’s my point, she ran as British in the Olympics! Lennox Lewis boxed as a Canadian in the Olympics but is considered a British boxing champ! Lots of “flags of convenience “ when it comes to international sport nowadays.

I think as she has had a British passport from the age of 2 she is not really using “ a flag of convenience.” Would you say the same about footballers who do not have an immediately British sounding name? Or cricketers ?

Oh dear! Emma was a British citizen long before she started playing tennis so it’s hardly a flag of convenience! Why can’t we just congratulate her on an absolutely incredible achievement and not start a ridiculous debate about her nationality.
I’m sure Paul who kindly let us know that the match was to be screened on terrestrial tv didn’t expect it to turn into an argument like all too many well meaning posts on talkback seem to!

Does it really matter?
Congratulations to her for a fabulous achievement at a young age.
I'd say the same whether she was the UK or Timbuktu!
