Or more likely driver/rider/both error. Hopefully everyone makes a full recovery

We don't know what happen so don't jump to conclusion and what I seen of the organised of the time trial it is done well with sign and Marshall and their do having to have a licence or permit to hold a time trial on the a3 I guess

Prior on opposite carriageway going north where it bends a little, a car in front of me pulled out sharpish and without indicating to round a bike he saw late, no idea if he was part of this event as he was completely alone, luckily noone was in the middle lane and I was able to slow and pull round safely. I know it's legal to cycle on the A3 as it's not a motorway, but it's still a very busy major route from London to the coast and it feels a lot like a motorway, but without the benefit of wider lanes or a hard shoulder.
I think the police and Highways Agency should consider closing a lane (still leaves 2 open) for future cycling events and they should carry out some of kind of public public safety report to see how future events could be made even safer and the public should be invited to comment and be informed of any recommendations.
In the meantime we can't jump to any kind of conclusions why there was a crash, of course there are risks in everything, I really hope anyone involved makes a good recovery, especially those on 2 wheels, it doesn't bear thinking about, let's no speculate on things we don't yet know and not every crash is someone's fault anyway.
It might also be worth mentioning there are off carriageway cycle routes along the A3 hereabouts everywhere except the last quarter/half mile to Liphook, I know they are unsuitable for these kind of events, but surely it's about time the council/Highways Agency/police or whoever it is, got together and made that last little bit of missing cycle path happen, we know how dangerous the A3 can be and it puts a lot of people off using that otherwise great route to Hindhead. I know there are detours ie up through Bramshot but they are awkward or involve illegally cycling on Bramshot Common etc. or else going on the A3 in part.

Correction, don't know what I was thinking, there are of course only 2 lanes here, so it would be trickier to close one, would it still be feasible?

On the subject of cycle time trials. They are a danger can"t they do their time trials on the old A3. Safer for all.

Obviously the anti - cycle complainers assume straight away bicycle involved they are so eager to jump on the email bandwagon they don;t read it was a MOTORCYCLE & CAR - My best wishes for the best recovery to those involved.

K
Perhaps the motorcycle or car was trying to avoid a stupid road race bicycle 🚲.
Don't care how you put it, bicycles should not be allowed on the A3!! An absolute menace & danger to other road users who's vehicles go at 70mph !

N, the thing is that if we want top cyclists and to compete at high level, we need to accomodate them on our roads somewhere and learn to share, it's fantastic how this little nation punches above it's weight internationally so I think as a 'cycling' town we should show our support for cycling events.
None of us know what caused this accident and it didn't seem to involve any cyclists (thank god) so we should assume the cycle event was a red herring, sadly motorbikes are even more vulnerable on our roads, as a cyclist I'm glad, as a motorcyclist I'm sad, but I guess these are real risks we take for our love of 2 wheels as Born Again Bikers, we all wish the motorcyclist a speedy recovery.
As an aside, I was knocked off my bicycle on the A3 some years ago, luckily only slight bruises but no injuries as I ended up in the hedgerow, I was just making my way home and there was no cycle path on the last stretch to Liphook. There is now a large triangular cycle sign there to warn motorists of cyclists in the lane, which the Highways Agency put in afterwards, the only tribute to my close shave, if it helps someone great, although I wouldn't rely on the drivers reading it and slowing down, we need that last little section of cycle route completed for everyone's sake!
