Dangerous driving in village centre
- Mary W (26th Aug 2021 - 19:51:41)

Had a nasty experience this evening coming out from parking area behind Lloyds pharmacy. The traffic was heavy at about 5.45 with traffic queuing in the lane approaching the mini junction.

I checked twice to my right that the road was clear coming from the mini and proceeded to my left, only to be violently hooted by a fast accelerating white or white and black small hatchback who nearly had me off the road. When he came round the mini he should have slowed when he saw my car exiting the car park - accelerating and blowing his horn could have caused a serious accident in a less experienced driver.

There is no way he was going at 20 mph and if a pedestrian was trying to cross at that moment, they would no longer be with us.

I couldn’t have done anything different - I can’t see round corners, and can only view road as far as the mini coming out from that parking area.

Drivers should realise that the reason for the 20 mph is because there are two car park exits and a residential road very close together at that point. I have a top grade advanced motoring award gained in the last 3 years, and I take no chances of being involved in any traffic collisions.

Perhaps we need some CCTV cameras in Liphook centre.

So the driver used the "audible warning device" to let you know of his presence, and by definition the driver will be accelerating as they are leaving the junction behind them.

Mary you clearly feel he was going too fast, the other driver may feel that you pulled out in front of him.

6 of one, half a dozen of the other.

You were clearly able to use your additional driving skills to avoid an accident, which is why Insurers usually reduce the premium the advanced drivers, as they are less likely to have a crash.

My view is that people make mistakes, and what we do afterwards to not compound the issue is what make us better drivers.

I can see your argument and I suppose you had to have witnessed it to understand where I am coming from.

Going at 20 there is no way anyone could have covered that distance and passed me at the speed he did. He was still in the 20 mph zone, the max speed, not the minimum. And you give an ‘audible warning’ before a car pulls out, a short warning to get attention. Not a prolonged blast after it is fully on the carriageway.

I already said that the space between the exit and the mini was clear before I pulled out. I checked twice. I assume he came round the corner from the Haslemere Road, already building up speed before he could see if the road was clear.

An unnecessary and extremely dangerous procedure that left me quite shaken.
