'Eco' Town: a threat to Liphook?
- James (29th Jul 2011 - 22:20:47)

I would be interested to hear the views of Liphook people on the proposed ‘eco’ town that is being promoted by the EHDC. There seems to have been no discussion about it on this website, yet it could have a major impact on the Liphook area.
Does the Parish Council have a view on it? Other parishes certainly do; “Whitehill Town, Headley, Churt and other bodies as far away as Wrecclesham oppose the plan in its current form, along with the National Trust, RSPB, Wildlife Trust and many others, including Hampshire County Council itself on transport” to quote the Bordon Area Action Group.
It appears that councillors from elsewhere in East Hampshire are very keen on the plan. Could this be because it takes the pressure to accept new housing off towns such as Petersfield and Alton?
The EHDC has avoided any large-scale survey of public opinion. Only a small-scale survey using leading questions such as ‘Do you want better facilities in your town?’ has been carried out and from this they have claimed extensive public support.
By all means read the EHDC’s glossy brochures but please read BAAG’s website too.

I cannot see this ever getting started in the present economic climate. Most of the initial money has been squandered on consultants who have been paid to produce the plan, but it is dependent on private development money coming forward to build the eco houses, which are the most expensive to build. There are not enough new jobs in Bordon so people will not want to buy a house in an eco town, where they are supposed to cycle or walk to walk if there are no jobs. The present government are cutting back their spending.
