A3 tunnel southbound
- Editor (27th Jul 2011 - 12:45:15)

Well that was fun.

Just been through the tunnel southbound at 12:30 today.

Southbound traffic was queued back to the Brook turning, so took quite a time to get from there to the tunnel entrance.

This is because they still have the single lane restriction in place until you reach the new tarmac leading down to the entrance.

Southbound entrance

Light at the end of the tunnel !

OMG just come home from Guildford. Single lane still in place as mentioned, but tailback as far as the Milford turn off. Worse than ever seen before tunnel opened.
Northbound back to Liphook bridge. £371 million spent to produce this!!

Glad it's opened (well half of it anyway) but came home on the A3 this afternoon and at 4.30pm the queue was back to Milford!!.....so much for speeding up the journey!
Ended up turning off at Brook and coming home via Haslemere.
Sure it will be better tomorrow, or the weekend, when they fully open both lanes.

I was so disappointed when I came back from Wimbledon at about 1.30 pm. Was so hoping to be able to knock minutes off my journey. Instead there was a huge queue back to Brook and it took longer than it does usually at that time of day - especially in school holidays.

I hope they aren't going to keep the 40 mph single lane in place for too long. In the news tonight they resolutely kept the cameras away from the tailback.

Yep, worst journey back south ever today! I'm assuming it was because of the sheer volume of day trippers wanting to go through the tunnel. Also, everyone was driving through the tunnel at 50mph or less when the speed limit is 70!!!!! There are many "National Speed Limit Applies" signs through the tunnel so this was very frustrating.

Classic !!!

What a joke! traffic jams worse than before.. Only in Britain!

Re: A3 tunnel southbound
- Richard (27th Jul 2011 - 20:23:10)

Just checked on the Highways site at 20:20 and there are 15 minute delays...And exactly how much was this tunnel? Perhaps they should have finished it before opening it...I am sure there is a very good reason why the cones were not removed from the South bound carriage way, but it seems very odd to build a new road, and then it causes worse congestion than the issue it was supposed to alleviate...

The cones are needed to protect the workmen who are now doing the road workings to join the north bound carriage way to the old dual carriageway. They couldn't do that until the southbound traffic wasn't driving over it. And yes, all the extra traffic was most likely sightseers - like me. Ooops.

I just don't understand the attraction of driving throuigh the tunnel.

Been through one - been through them all.

A tunnel is a tunnel - is a tunnel, is a tunnel.................

- Jane G (27th Jul 2011 - 21:23:31)

Well we decided to join the daytrippers at 9pm for a drive thru!

Came off at the Thursley junction so we could come back towards Liphook through the tunnel...so did the other 4 cars in front of us and the 1 behind!! So yes the traffic is still queueing to get to the tunnel but it looks like it is us sightseers that are causing the problem :-)

Glad we did it though!

Re: A3 tunnel southbound
- Phil (27th Jul 2011 - 22:34:07)

Commuting home from Guildford, heard the traffic report for the tunnel and openly laughed as I drove - as ever - through Millford and on to Haslemere etc.

What a joke! Nice to see my tax going to solve the traffic problem!

Okay, so first day and all, but is this how it will be for ever- don't forget it is half term and traffic is light at the moment!

Maybe it was the wrong sort of traffic, or the wrong sort of tunnel? Wait for winter - any ice and cars won't be going up or down that slope to the portal, I'll bet .... !

I had hope, once.

Now then, Jane, that is a sad tale!

I had just driven back from Nottingham via Kings Lynn and Ipswich, and this was the first jam I got into in 2 days of driving ... had hoped to do Guildford to lIphook in a record 15 mins and instead it took 45 ....

but don't you think the approach to the tunnel is stunning? It's a beautiful stretch of road in my book (having seen a lot of roads in the last 48 hours)

Re: A3 tunnel southbound
- Mary W (27th Jul 2011 - 23:23:44)

I kept my speed down going through the tunnel because I could see other people going quite slowly and thought I must have missed the signs!

But there was no hold-up going through the tunnel, just the mile of stationary traffic on the single-carriageway section of cones. Let's hope Ed is right, and all will be perfect on Friday...don't hold your breath.

Re: A3 tunnel southbound
- Richard (28th Jul 2011 - 17:41:39)

Went through teh tunnel today at 16:00hrs. De-coned (if such a word exists - I suspect not) and went straight through! Hopefully the north bound opening will be a bit smoother!

Re: A3 tunnel southbound
- Finchie (29th Jul 2011 - 02:52:42)

So my two observations
- Wow it is long. For some reason I though it would be shorter !!
- Wow it is bendy. For some other reason I thought it would be straight !!

Still cost a lot in a taxi back from Woking having missed the last train though !!!

Happy weekend !

Cheers, Finchie

Has anyone noticed whether the roads surrounding the A3 are quieter as less traffic is trying to avoid Hindhead (eg, in Liphook)?

Re: A3 tunnel southbound
- Mary W (29th Jul 2011 - 22:11:17)

They do seem quieter, but couldn't decide whether this was because people were avoiding the contractor's lights between Liphook and Liss combined with school holidays - and maybe also trying out the tunnels...

Rush hour drive from Liphook to Accident and Emergency
- 15 minutes.

spent a pleasant 4 hours with Hoskins sprog #3 at the Royal Surrey last night.

Pleased to say that this will have a good impact on ambulance response times in the area.
