Hungry Horse FAKE reviews
- Ian (20th May 2021 - 20:21:42)
Less than one week after reopening the Hungry Horse management up to its old tricks of writing their own reviews on Tripadvisor!!! Don’t believe me then look for yourself, laughable

Thought I read somewhere that there was a new manageress at the ANCHOR. If it’s run probably it could be a great asset to our community we need somewhere cheap and cheerful but well run.

- Jen (21st May 2021 - 14:58:23)
Hmm I'm inclined to agree that some of those latest reviews could be fakes. I looked at the first two: the 1st reviewer had never posted any other reviews and the 2nd reviewer had only posted one previous review, which was also for the Royal Anchor.
I usually like to check out a person's other reviews, in addition to the latest one and ignore those from accounts created solely to review one venue.

Is it Green King are paying for reviews or have employees writing them? I have noticed some of the old ones for The Anchor are from contributors that just leave reviews for Green King pubs all over the country? Seems a bit odd

I've never had a problem with the Hungry Horse. Let's ignore these reviews which may be true or may be fake and go and try the Anchor.
I mean it's not going to break the bank, and shock horror you may enjoy it, i always do.

I think we are in danger of expecting too much. The Anchor is a rural rough and ready pub (I say that respectfully) and their prices are very cheap. It's not some trendy wine bar where you snap your fingers to get served and a waiter comes scurrying to attend to your every need (which, of course, is reflected in their tariffs and the level of tip you're expected to leave.) Stop whining!

Strange how the recent reviews all mention "Steve" as being the landlord.
On the 13th May Sandra Paul posted on the Liphook Community Facebook page that she is the new manageress of The Anchor?
Is it a "husband and wife team"?

I don't think this post is about the merits or failings of the pub itself, more about the unreliability of what you read on the Internet! I had seen somewhere that it is thought that up to 30% of reviews on review sites are fake. Looking at Royal Anchor though I suspect nearer 90% are

I agree it is rough and ready and unless the Hungry Horse Chain sells the pub, it will probably not improve. Just think though years ago the Deers hut was quite rough and ready but now it is very popular as a gastro pub. I am sure it would attract a lot of customers if taken upmarket and takings improve.

- er (22nd May 2021 - 17:02:20)
Some of us don't always want to (or can't afford) to eat at the posh places and frankly if you don't like our kind of folk, our kind of prices and oftentimes loads of kids running around the big garden laughing and drinking an orange squash and eating a burger and chips, the odd bit of stupidity from the grown ups once in a while, but overall a more relaxing atmosphere to spend a few hours in than your average ubiquitous stern faced 'what is that noisy child doing in here!' 'has your house price gone up as much as ours dear?' poshe gin and tonic with un burger avec les potato frites et un orange squashe please le barman, then fine with me, I've had many a pleasant trip to the Anchor and no I don't work there and don't want it to become just another gastro pub😂😂😂

'ere ere, er. It's ironic 'cos fifty years ago the Anchor was quite posh. They were very choosy who drank there in those days. As you say, it was the Deer's Hut and Green Dragon that were rough then.

Ah ha er, lovely bit of inverted snobbery! Luckily you can get some chips from various places in Liphook to put on your shoulder!

I'm all for a local pub that does food that is cheap and cheerful, but last time I went to eat at The Anchor the table was filthy and one of the meals was inedible ( and I'm not a fussy eater).

Greene king (hungry horse) got done for tax avoidance a few years back. I’d prefer to put my money into somewhere that pays in and supports this country, especially in a time of such need.

Re: Hungry Horse FAKE reviews
- AF (23rd May 2021 - 20:35:51)
To all the moaners how about we all boycott the Anchor so Green King close it down.
Then we can get a developer to convert it into Flats and all the grounds and car park into a nice housing estate.
Then the developer contributions can go into some affordable housing project in the New Forest(Cant possibly use them for local need).
Are you happy now.

I agree with AF. The only people who would suffer would be the low paid staff. I wonder how these people who would like it turned into an airy-fairy gastro pub would manage on nine quid an hour.

AF and D. How about Green King get decent management in and make it a well run pub. No need then for fake BS reviews!

Re: Hungry Horse FAKE reviews

Ian, why do people pay so much attention to these reviews in the first place, when surely it is better just to go and have a look for oneself?

Re: Hungry Horse FAKE reviews
- Ian (24th May 2021 - 11:11:53)
D, reviews are part of our lives now, even FAKE ones like those of the Hungry Horse! I have over the last few years periodically gone back to the Anchor in the hope it ups it’s game but am always left disappointed! They would do better in introducing better staff training, better cleaning than continuing to delude themselves with FAKE positive reviews

We were in there Saturday lunchtime. The table was clean, the service was quick and the meal was good. Just saying 🙂

Theres one thing you can rely on from the people on here, and that is kicking someone when they are down. The Hungry Horse doesnt stand a chance of getting back on track with all of the adverse comments. Not everyone can afford to eat at the more elite venues in Liphook, so how about leaving them alone, and letting individual families go there, and decide for themselves.

Ian D is quite right if you don’t like it don’t go simple as that . If it’s not up to your standard ok but some people like it stop slagging it of. You seem to have a vendetta about it.

Well it seems like we might not have to wait much longer for an alternative place to eat and drink as REDH have applied for a licence to operate until just after midnight at the old Countrywide store next to the station. The place will also be a cafe and selI craft beers for consumption at home. If anyone wants to find out what they are like they have one place already open behind the Post Office in Haslemere. If the licence is granted then I'm sure it will be a good benefit to Liphook as prices aren't too expensive and the owners are local as they have a gin distillery already here nearly next to Countrywide with their head office.

This is exciting news. Iit will be great to see some activity on that site.
All we need now is the 'doctors surgery' to be built in that field at the bottom of Station Road; that 'organ shop' to open on the London Road, and the 'Cinema' and 'Square Dental' to open in the Square.
My tongue is slightly in my cheek - I really hope the REDH project goes ahead.

If people could not afford to eat and drink at the Deers Hut or the links the venues would have closed down would they not? They are 2 independent venues not part of a chain like the hungry horse so obviously doing something right! Why should the best building in the middle of the village not be a destination venue to be proud of?

I went to the Anchor earlier this week and surprisingly the food was better than expected.
I had only two issues with it. Firstly, the other customers, one customer was letting their dog run wild and disturbing other customers and jumping up at the table and secondly one of the mirrors in the gents was missing.
I found one waiter to be very polite and respectful. The chips weren't great but they were satisfactory.

In my experience dogs have never been allowed inside the pub so you must have been outside?

Interesting to read this whole thread. As a family we ate at Hungry Horse tonight for the first time since full lockdown............ in spite of the negative reviews here, The tables were clean, the service was quick and polite, the food was extremely good and the size of the bill was a positive. Whilst I fully accept that the place is not everyone's idea of heaven, I found nothing to complain about- quite the opposite when compared to some of the expensive gastro-places which have been developed in my 20+ years in Liphook.
Each to his own, I guess!!

Some of the criticisms here are just petty. A mirror missing in the gents toilet? Oh yes, I always check my bald spot after using the loo. If we are going to whine about the other customers should we really be in a public house in the first place?

Joe surely it makes no difference to the relevance of the comment whether or not the customer with the dog was outside? The point is that nobody wants a dog running loose around the tables and pestering them, jumping up and so on.
James, did you complain to the manager about the dog? I hope you did!

- er (6th Jun 2021 - 15:09:24)
Obviously wasn't a posh dog or everybody would have been delighted😂
Actually I like having a range of pub choices around here, some are great for impressing, eating home made burger and dressing a bit fancier, some days you just want to chill in the big old Anchor enjoying a Guinness, pre-prepared burger and chips! To be honest, if your eating out health-wise I don't think there's much in it, all restaurant food and drinks are a bit too high in fat, sugar or salt etc, so just enjoy it while we can🤣

The posting says letting the dog jump up at THE table, I am thinking then only at the owners table. I may well be wrong. I agree dogs should be controlled if in a dining area inside or out.

There are a lot of restaurants which do not serve burgers and chips thankfully not all restaurants serve unhealthy food. The mark of a good pub or restaurant is if they make their own desserts eg souffle` or something difficult.
