Mini-roundabouts and ignorant drivers...
- Dave (24th Jul 2011 - 12:01:22)

Yes, you in the blue mini. You know who you are! There is a mini-roundabout there as you go past the Royal Anchor on your left heading towards Bordon. It is therefore not the place to accelerate as if it were a straight road as you glare at the driver trying to enter the roundabout legitimately from Longmoor Road. If you had eased off as you should do whilst entering a roundabout then there would have been no problem. Yes, you should give way from the right but you should not be accelerating as if the roundabout didn't exist...

I hate this too. Plus the amount ot drivers that do not even bother to go around the roundabout but just turn and go on the wrong side of it is definitely on the increase

If the Mini driver was passing the Anchor, heading towards Bordon, and you were coming out of Longmoor Road, he did have right of way, even if he may have been exercising his right in a less than sensible fashion. A brief reminder of the Highway Code, "Give priority to traffic approaching from your right, unless directed otherwise by signs, road markings or traffic lights".

Richard - can you read? My post clearly states that you should give way from the right. The problem here is drivers heading towards Bordon effectively ignoring the existence of the roundabout and accelerating across it starting from as far back as the Anchor. Not only is this a 20 mph zone which should be adhered to but drivers heading towards Bordon should themselves be easing off in preperation to give way to traffic from the right. Simply because the layout of the roundabout means that drivers don't need to change direction in any way through it does not mean they should ignore its existence. You would fail any driving test if you drove like that....

Perhaps the driver felt that he was reacting appropriately to the hazard. Everyone has a different perception of hazard, and if you feel that theirs is "different" to yours, then drive defensively to accomodate them. We are all agreed the person concerned (or at least I think we are) that they were being a little bit daft, but they may have had a reason to be doing what they did (eg family emergency, etc.)...Who are we to question it? Personally, I would rather people passing through that roundabout concentrated more on their driving and less on their mobile 'phones!

Understand arguements regarding this but I believe the Highway Code states "give way to traffic ON the roundabout from the right".
If a vehicle isn't actually on the roundabout you are quite within your rights to pull onto the roundabout yourself. The problem comes if the other vehicle is travelling at speed.
You have to be confident/forceful at peak times to keep the traffic moving otherwise you can end up sitting there for ages, frustrating the traffic behind you.
Considering the amount of vehicles that pass the roundabouts in The Square, without actually hitting each other, they do seem to be work OK.

That's well put Darren. I was turning right from Longmoor Road and the Blue Mini didn't need to brake but gave me a foul look as they continued to accelerate in the Bordon direction as if I had prevented them from accelerating as hard as they intended. For me, this is the only area where the mini-roundabouts cause problems because there is no need for people driving in this direction to change course. The white raised area of the roundabout could be changed to stop this from happening in my opinion.

I was always taught to slow down when approaching any junction and to be observant for drivers who might be making unsafe maneovres (no matter who had right of way). If the mini driver had not only been accelerating but speeding over the mini roundabout and smashed into a car from Longmoor Road which was already on the junction he would probably be prosecuted for driving without due care and attention and maybe even dangerous driving.

Those roundabouts are dangerous at times. I think Richard said that the Highway Code says you should give way to traffic 'approaching' the roundabout. A bit different from being 'on' it. They are so close together, the whole business is hard to interpret, with the best will in the world.

At least we may be getting a bit less traffic once the tunnel opens fully.
