Unsolicited Windows Assistance
- Paul Robinson (22nd Jul 2011 - 12:21:30)

This morning I had an unsolicited telephone call on my land line from a gentleman with a strong Indian / Pakistani accent advising me that he was calling me from Windows Technical Department and was aware that there was a fault in my computer or laptop.

Because of a warning I had read on this site I knew that he was going to demonstrate the fault by putting a virus into my system and charging me to remove it.

I asked him for his telephone number which he said was 016 140 85666. I hung up on him and dialled the number which came up with a continuous number unobtainable tone.

Be aware as they tend to target a specific area code so next time it might be you.

The best way to check a number is http://whocallsme.com/ which allows you to check and also gives information about scams.

Windows/Microsoft will NEVER call you.

I have had a number of calls regarding this matter , the first about two years ago. Stupidly I went along with it and it crashed my computer. The way I deal with the calls now is to pretend to go along with it for a while then I leave the phone on the table for about half an hour. You can hear them frantically trying to get your attention. When they put the phone down they cannot dial out to other people. They are getting an expensive phone bill I hope, and I am getting a little bit of satisfaction from it , petty I know but makes me better.
