Pension
- Pensioner (22nd Mar 2021 - 17:07:49)

I’m on a basic pension just had notification from the government I will be going to get a rise in my pension when I reach 80 . Thought great might be able to afford a beer now and again then looked at the amount 25 p a week. Costs more to send it out. Never mind was exciting for a minute.

Re: Pension
- I (22nd Mar 2021 - 18:55:20)

Due to the pandemic a lot of non pensioners have taken a massive hit on their incomes. To protect the elderly and vulnerable the country quite rightly lock-downed and the economy took a massive hit, which working people will be paying off for decades. I think many pensioners need to appreciate just what the younger generations have sacrificed this last year for their well being

Dear J, Pensioner posted a light hearted comment. Many elderly people struggle to live on a basic state pension; must you be so mean spirited and churlish? Times are tough for us all. Take care.

Re: Pension
- D (22nd Mar 2021 - 20:45:48)

I think a more accurate statement would have been "TAXPAYERS will be paying off for decades," of which many pensioners are. Of course we will, all these furlough payments have to be funded from somewhere.

I, today's pensioners suffered the after effects of World War II well into the 1980's and beyond. Stop whining.

Re: Pension

Although the majority of deaths from covid occur in the elderly, younger people especially those with other medical conditions are also dying and at risk from covid. The only 2 people I know who had covid in the first lockdown were a healthy married couple in their 40s. The lady still has long covid from it. Also, some people over retirement age are still working because they have to. The furlough scheme in this country has been very generous, all of our freedom has been curtailed and we are all making sacrifices, so to blame the elderly for your loss of freedom is very selfish. Perhaps our government should have taken steps to curtail travellers from entering this country once we knew of the virus in other countries and test those entering, which I still think is not happening.

The UK state pension is the worst in the developed world, according to data from Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and published in the Financial Times.

The problem with the British mind is we assume we are the best at everything and sadly the political classes on all sides have taken advantage of this for decades, we are more than happy to roll over and take it from all angles and then rub everyone else’s face in it claiming we are the best of the best.

I think Nurses and Teachers should be higher up the list for increases rather than pensions at this point in time

Re: Pension
- Doe (23rd Mar 2021 - 11:19:58)

You still have an income during this pandemic? One that hasn’t been lowered or lost? Wow!

Re: Pension
- passfield resident (23rd Mar 2021 - 12:50:45)

I-your comment is crass-this argument about younger people sacrificing this or that to protect the elderly is pathetic. It's elderly people who have been dying. They have spent their lifetimes contributing to this country. Some of them fought in the Second World War to keep us free. Most people have found the last year difficult, but the blame game doesn't help. Get a life

Re: Pension
- Bubble146 (23rd Mar 2021 - 12:55:25)

Lets not kid ourselves, what is about to come from our 'political elite' is austerity mark 2, under the guise of 'well we will have to pay this money back.'

The reality is that we do not, the interest rates are at an all time low, the cost of servicing the debt is very little. But the government will look after their own as usual. Drip down economics is a myth, this is how we got to the pre-pandemic situation.

Give the nurses, teachers, pensioners a well deserved pay increase, at least they are going to spend it in the real economy, rather than invest it in the market and further inflate the equity bubble, which will inevitable burst and we will end up picking up the tab again.

Please do not respond with the standard but what about the value of my pension, when the market crashes, have a look at your isa growth over the past 12 months, if it is market related. It is simply scare tactics, a lot of people have made a lot of money over the past 12 months.

The only way out is growth and sharing the growth fairly in society. The stream above is simply divide and conquer, which will continue the status quo.

Re: Pension

To the original post. If you are on a basic state pension please look into pension credit and even if it only add a few pounds a week it may mean you don't pay council tax etc. If you have a health issue the Attendance Allowance may also be something to enquire about. Pension credit is means tested but having savings does not necessarily rule you out.

Re: Pension
- Don (23rd Mar 2021 - 15:03:21)

Passfield resident - and a lot more elderly people would have died if the younger generations hadn't sacrificed their freedoms and incomes by generally complying with the lockdowns.

Re: Pension
- passfield resident (23rd Mar 2021 - 15:51:55)

Don-this talk of sacrifice is a case of getting things the wrong way round. Young people (and everybody else) were required by law to help limit the spread of covid. It is our civic duty to help others on society who are vulnerable. People should feel better about themselves for taking part in a common effort, rather than moaning about their freedom being taken away.In fact, it would have been better for everybody if more freedoms had been taken away early in the pandemic to preserve more lives.Millions of young people gave their lives in wars in the last century. That is sacrifice.

Re: Pension
- joe (23rd Mar 2021 - 17:40:21)

Some elderly have put themselves into self isolation for a year now. We have all lost freedoms. Are you saying then that the elderly do not deserve to have their freedom, just because they are more at risk? No age group likes to have their normal life curtailed? the virus is affecting younger people and by staying at home we help each other.
if you want to blame people for the extended lockdown blame the decision makers for not closing airports to holidays makers, and not having enough testing in place early enough.

Re: Pension
- I (23rd Mar 2021 - 18:56:28)

I think passfield resident you need to broaden your mind a bit! You’re looking at things in a very selfish (and possibly self serving) way. Your view on sacrifice is very one dimensional and simplistic

Re: Pension
- D (23rd Mar 2021 - 19:07:38)

Once again we see insidious subversives trying to stir up tension between the old and young of Liphook. Shame.

Re: Pension
- James (23rd Mar 2021 - 20:17:11)

D, that's a bit hypocritical of you isn't it?

In other news, we have all lost freedoms some more than others. Some people haven't been able to see family, go to work or school and meet-up with friends. Just because some people have lost more freedoms than others doesn't mean they necessarily have it worse of, they can have it EQUALLY as bad.

We need to remember that this is a time of unity and solidarity. We have all sacrificed our freedoms.

Just remember who's fault it was because he didn't lockdown and take the necessary precautions earlier.

I am shocked to see how a post about pensions has come this far off topic.

Re: Pension
- passfield resident (23rd Mar 2021 - 20:33:49)

I-you would need to explain to me what part of my argument is selfish. I talk to young people all the time and understand perfectly well how the last year has affected them. In fact I was speaking to my nephew about this today. I just make the point that lockdowns have been necessary and there's no point in pitting the interests of one group against another. It's patently obvious that older people have borne the brunt of the pandemic- my dad has hardly been out of his house for a year on top of the fear of catching covid( but he doesn't complain about it or blame anyone).
