Station Bridge
- AF (11th Mar 2021 - 19:45:14)

When i found out the new station footbridge would take 11 months to build i thought it a bit excessive. However looking at the foundations they built the bridge is going to be massive, i heard the part of the cost for the bridge which is around 1Million pounds is being met by developer contributions. I'm glad the money is being used locally but i feel the money could have been spent on something else and just replaced the bridge like tor like.

AF, you don’t have mobility issues then? Do some research before making such an ill informed post!!

Re: Station Bridge
- rolli (12th Mar 2021 - 09:49:59)

If the bridge was replaced like for like as the original poster states then what about those wishing to use the station who are wheelchair bound, have buggies/prams or dare I say it cyclists (yes they do use trains to get to point B before cycling back to point A)?

Also the new bridge and lifts will greatly help those with general mobility issues as well.

Rolli

I realize this massive bridge with lifts will be a help to some people, of course from my experience of travelling on trains for a number of years these lifts seem to be rather unreliable and are often broken.
It seems a alot of money to spend on something that will have such a limited use, are there really a large amount of wheelchair people in Liphook who want to use the train. There are buggies so it would help them but again not too many of them and as for cyclists they can easily carry them over the bridge.
However i do believe the suggestion made before the bridge was passed was to have a ramp going up the embankment to the road bridge, a cheaper alternative and one that would not break down.

So AF, you are just looking at the matter from your own point of view rather than the community as a whole. Nice.

I think it is a good improvement to have the bridge, and bring the rail facilities into the 21st Century!

Re: Station Bridge
- T (13th Mar 2021 - 08:37:44)

I asked Network rail if it was true they were getting SIL funding or developer contributions and they told me they were funding the full bridge replacement themselves. They’re not aware of any other party funding so not sure why the local paper is saying otherwise. I think it’ll be the way all new bridges will have to have lifts or provision for them just the same way you have to make new buildings fully accessible.

They were having to be legally compliant to provide for disabled passengers. They were at risk of being taken to court over it.

Re: Station Bridge
- Ian (13th Mar 2021 - 12:57:12)

It’s right and proper in this day and age to plan and accommodate for people with mobility issues. Without infrastructure changes society won’t change and it really is irrelevant how many wheelchair users there are.

- TD (15th Mar 2021 - 09:55:14)

@AF. Ref your comment "There are buggies...but again not too many of them".

Don't you think that those with buggies are somewhat put off by the lack of lifts and that's why you don't see them? likewise you won't see many disabled passengers at the station for the same reason.

I for one would prefer to take my kids to their nursery in Haslemere by train but trying to get a heavy double buggy and bags over the existing bridge, which is normally full of commuters, is a nightmare so I'm forced to drive. Station staff have normally been very helpful but that does not make up for the lack of facilities.

(Before I'm questioned why I go to Haslemere, there aren't any full time nurseries in Liphook that cater to under twos.)

Bring on the bridge!

- Mary W (16th Mar 2021 - 23:10:16)

It will be lovely to have lifts.

The main problem for me at Liphook Station is not being strong enough to step up onto the train because it is so much higher than a normal train, so I have to drive to Haslemere. There is no problem getting off coming home, presumably the platform is a bit higher going west?

All they would need to do is to build up a ten yard square platform at the front of the train with a ramp and everyone with a slight mobility problem or frailty could board the train and then walk through to find a seat.

No wonder its going to take 11 months, I live next to the building works and every Friday, they usually pack up for the day and go home early.friday just gone they had left by 1pm.

As Liphook continues to expand, so more people with different needs will use different facilities including the station. Going on holiday by train, got suitcases? I think even I might prefer to use a lift.

The original poster is typical of so many nowadays that look at things from just their own perspective rather than the community as a whole. We have become a very selfish and self centred society.

Mary W

What if wheelchair users want to go on the other line toward Guildford?
Can you explain how we get over the bridge ?.
Thanks .

H, presumably you would use the lifts, as Mary W mentioned in her post?

Dear AF,
I was a mobility scooter user for a while - it was impossible to use Liphook station. I had to travel to Haslemere in order to use the train - expensive and inconvenient, but at least I was financially able to do that. Most people cannot . Access to public transport is a real issue for the disabled, the elderly, and parents with small children. I’m quite shocked how selfish people are. I appreciate it’s a lot of money for a bridge, but it’s a necessity not a frippery!

Re: Station Bridge
- AF (23rd Mar 2021 - 21:20:40)

I wonder if people read my second post saying that i was in favour of people who cant use stairs having access to platform 2, i just think a ramp up tje embankment posibly a zig zag to keep the gradient was a better idea.
If the lifts break down and believe me they often do you could be stranded on the platform with no way off.

Re: Station Bridge
- Mary W (23rd Apr 2021 - 16:32:09)

The lifts at Haslemere often have problems, sometimes breaking down and later at night, being closed down, presumably to avoid people getting up to mischief once the staff go home. It will be interesting to see how they deal with setbacks in Liphook.

But as I can’t actually climb up on to the train because the step up is super high, I will still have to drive to Haslemere.
