Cavity wall insulation
- Steven (9th Mar 2021 - 13:32:58)

Had some chaps come round offering zero cost cavity wall insulation (paid for by EHDC under the green scheme)

Company is called South Coast Insulation Services

Does anyone have any experience of them that could pass on ?

Cavity wall insulation for your property is not a good idea. These companies just inject foam. I do not think EHDC will pay for it, their scheme is only available for residents of Bordon. I have looked into it.

Joe is quite right don’t do it. Stupidly I had my bungalow done within a week water poring in over the window frame. Contacted a double glazing friend he said it’s the worst thing you can do. Outside walls let water through if you fill that cavity with insulation then the water tracks across and causes all sorts of problems. My daughter in Portsmouth bought a house which had recently had cavity insulation done damp and black mould everywhere a complete nightmare.

Thank you both - this is why Liphook talkback is such a great resource, I was on the fence but now will definitely not be going ahead with the offer

I have had cavity wall insulation on 2 properties I have owned Both some years ago without any issues at all.

I also had a 20 year guarantee with the installation.
Both times they were “free”,and both through government initiatives.

One property was a house the other a bungalow, and both installations were completed professionally.

Perhaps do more research before accepting a couple of comments from this site.

It does make a difference and has benefits.

I had mine done later part of last year under a scheme for ehdc ..I live in Liphook.

I have had it done in Liphook a few years ago. Made a massive difference to the warmth of our house and have had no problems at all.
All depends on the quality of the exterior bricks and brickwork.

Just to bring this back to visibility - was doorstepped today by what appears to be the same people, claimed to be working in conjunction with EHDC - couldn't find any relevant info on website and have emailed the council to ask if it is valid. They wanted to drill into my wall to check cavity insulation and also offered to upgrade loft insulation in line with modern requirements. There seemed to be no age or income eligibility.

I am not saying there is anything wrong, but that I am deeply sceptical about someone coming to the door and offering something for free. I would have thought there would be publicity about it, not least from the council EHDC. The entities involved in this appear to be the Greener Home Group and South Coast Insulation Services, both seem to be legit businesses.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Always shop around and never buy anything from the door step would be my advice. Cavity wall insulation depends on the quality of the walls in which it's installed. There are different types. We installed mineral fibre 15 years ago and have no damp problems at all. It's certainly saved on energy bills. There are insulation schemes available from councils and government but they usually have eligibility criteria. If you seek advice from a reputable installation company they should be able to tell you of any schemes and advise how suitable your property is for installation. Do your research and good luck with the project.

We had cavity wall insulation installed for free at our last house which was arranged through British Gas (though we weren't British Gas customers). It was installed by the installation arm of SIG (Sheffield Insulation Group) who are one of the largest insulation suppliers in the UK. No problems at all with damp afterwards. My current house has the tell tale round mortar blobs that show that cavity wall insulation has been installed and, again, I don't have any problems with damp.

You are quite right to ask and not just hope for the best!

I believe a lot depends on the house, location, age, build quality and how watertight it all is to start with, so any work needed there should be thoroughly fixed first where possible!

Any significant water ingress from roof, leaking gutters, fascias, cracks, holes to pointing, especially on south westerly highly exposed walls, god forbid rising damp etc these could cause big problems if enough moisture got in amongst the filling or even if it wasn't sprayed/pumped evenly everywhere. It could potentially if unevenly spread cause cold bridging dampness which is a bit of a pain to solve and is moisture trying to escape, bear in mind the cavity is no longer functioning fully to it's architect's designed purpose so could be a double whammy, so best know as much about the providers, track record, guarantees, what product they use. Hopefully things have improved since this all started as a lot of mistakes were made and a lot of houses suffered through ignorance, rushing or bodging, this time round hopefully being rolled out better!

They will survey before, but maybe ask if they video or thermal cam it during or after to check it's all good and ensure even uptake which is the aim and can be trickier on certain properties, but bear in mind that their survey wiould be usually just that, also worth researching if possible condition of things like your wall ties (are they galvanised, a lot weren't!) so if the cavity once filled ever got damp it could be a real pain to fix, still if it works for you you'll save money and some penguins so fingers crossed and take the plunge (not into the warm, rising seas but to a dry if hopefully colder future:).

Yes your right had ours done by a firm government registered . Water came in over the window flooded bedroom. Not a good decision wish I hadn’t had it done. Ok perhaps on very sound walls the cavity is there for ventilation and really should be kept clear not a fan of cavity insulation.

They did our cavity wall insulation towards the end of last year. Although they left a bit of mess it was overall a positive experience.

We noticed that the heat was retained longer in the evening. We have not had any issues with damp.
