Liphook carols?
- AA (15th Dec 2020 - 09:26:21)

Are there any outdoor carols planned in central liphook this year? It would be nice to be able to take the small ones to something special that we can easily walk to! I'm guessing we would possibly have heard by now though.

Probably not a sensible idea this year. Apparently its a scientific fact that singing spreads droplets far greater distances than talking so even outdoors is likely to increase risk of spreading virus. We all want this pandemic to end so we should remain cautious and self disciplined this Christmas, avoid grouping together and keep social distancing, then hopefully next spring we can see normality return

I see Blackmoor Church are having a Carol Evening in the Church yard with mulled wine and mince pies.

A similar thing could be held on the Millennium Green just a thought.

Its a bonus if its in the Church yard as it will save time, they can meet their maker earlier and go straight in the ground.

Not very sensible to have carol singing in these times really is it. I think that having a christmas sing song in a graveyard is quite bizzare.

I've heard of lots of carol services being held elsewhere with just a band playing the music actually, or other variations such as remote vocals. There are many ways to make it safe if you give it a little thought. I just wondered if there was something similar happening nearby, there's really no need to be so condescending but perhaps I should have known in advance! Never mind. Merry Christmas.

AA, no-one is being condescending, just offering a different point of view. Merry Christmas

A A you say in your original post you wanted to take the little ones to something special. How about the Laser light train on the Watercress line? Even I am impressed as an oldie! There is a feature on it in the liphook herald.

The Blackmoor Carol Service is being organized incredibly sensibly.

Everyone has to be a long way apart.

It is outside in the elements, however, so you need to dress up warmly. It won't be like the carols outside the pub where everyone is packed in - spaces will be carefully marked out by lanterns.

One of the things they have done is organize amplification so you can stay in your car and take part. However, you would need to get there quite early for a good spot close by if you want to do this.

Above is the link to the information on the Church Facebook page.

St Matthews has been one of the churches that have gone to extraordinary lengths to remain open during the pandemic. They have closed every other pew and permit people to sit in only designated places. The whole church is disinfected afterwards.

They are running more than one Christingle service so that everyone that wants to come can do so - even though that means that Alice and the churchwardens will be working their socks off all day.

They are still not permitted to sing inside the church and the choir has not sung together since February, but outside is allowed. I went to my Mum's carol service outside at Christchurch (Ottershaw) last week, it was lovely as it is the first time I have sung since the first lockdown. Again this was all very safe and spaced out.

Blackmoor is a truly beautiful church.

Or if you fancy staying indoors you could look in on the St Mary's Bramshott "virtual" carol service, here:

Graham,

That sound like a great idea, however it seems as if the preferred option is lots of people of all ages can meet and vastly heighten the risk of contacting or infecting others with COVID.

Oh I forgot as they believe in a religion they're caring souls who put others before themselves and I bet they all stood clapping for the NHS.

Just a thought.

Well said David, the hypocrisy of many churchgoers during this pandemic has been astonishing

To be clear, I was not meaning to discourage people from attending the Blackmoor event. Just pointing out that there were online alternatives to enjoy carols, should people feel more comfortable with that.
