Speeding Tractor
- David (11th Nov 2020 20:27:39)
Does anyone know who the cretin is who's speeding up and down Portsmouth Rd in a tractor or who they work for?
The tractor was driving way too fast into the village this morning with school children around and again tonight speeding out of the village in the middle of the road.
If you're the driver take a second to consider your actions, if you employ the cretin sack him.

What colour is this tractor?

I've seen a large green tractor with a trailer going very fast between The Links and the railway bridge. Wouldn't swear doing more than 40 though.

I saw the tractor last night at around 18:20hrs. Couldn't say it was speeding, but because of its size, it certainly seems to be going very fast, and it was in the 20mph zone when I saw it, by the Kebab van.

Sounds like a John Deer.

Oops! John DEERE. I thought Liphook parents approved of oversized 4x4's charging around before and after school.

Hi.
My husband, while out walking the dog this morning saw this Green Tractor speeding down the London Road followed by another one with a trailer, who was driving a lot slower.
Totally irresponsible driving, not a thought for parents walking along with their children to school.

It was probably going no faster than a car, but because of the size of the vehicle and the high revving engine it may have given the impression of speed. There aren't many tractors that can do over 30mph. They are built for pulling not racing.

Evening D,
Yes it was the same green tractor that others have seen.
Unfortunately because of its speed I didn't get the reg, hopefully someone will and report it to the Police
Lets just hope the driver or employer reads this thread and they slow down before there's an accident.

You've driven lots of tractors then D?
I haven't seen this particular one but the big four wheelers capable of pulling trailers have in excess of 250hp engines and depending on spec can reach 40mph.

Yes. So I was 10mph out.

The tractor I saw the other night and again tonight is without doubt going faster then 30 mph.

Having googled this it appears there is a legal limit of 25 mph for tractors.

The tractor driver can't win, can he? We've all been stuck behind a tractor wishing it would go faster, this bloke is and we're still not satisfied. Oh well...

Tractors are generally limited to 50km/h so it really can't have been going over 30mph. There are tractors - some fendt and jcb that can legally go up to 40mph providing they have all wheel suspension and abs.

D
I only highlighted the tractor as I was concerned at the speed it was travelling and its size if there were to be an accident it would be a nasty one.
Tim, I'm not a farmer so with my limited knowledge of farming vehicles have described the vehicle as a tractor, again though as I've said previously I've witnessed both of the "big green four wheeled vehicles" travelling faster the 30 mph.
The drivers of both are clearly just wanting to get home as fast as possible like the rest of us in the evening (1930-2000).
I'm sure their speed would decrease if there were to be a Police patrol with speed gun.

I’ve seen this tractor numerous times, on one occasion the driver was using his mobile phone whilst going over the roundabout. It is a large John Deere.
I agree with you d that it probably looks faster than it is but when I saw him on Portsmouth road near station road exit he was flat out in top gear (as a regular tractor drive you can tell by the noise it makes). Even if he’s not breaking speed limits stopping distances are much greater in large tractors so a little more common sense driving through the village is all that’s needed, especially with the bohunt kids daily tendency to step into the road without looking.

Anon, you mentioning the mobile phone has jogged my memory. I remember seeing such a vehicle and person top of Longmoor Road about three years ago.

Anon,
Fully agree with you, just a bit of common sense is needed.

Information on tractors and speed:
"The majority of tractors may travel at up to 40 km/h (approximately 25 mph). However, some tractors built to higher specifications are permitted to be driven at up to 40 mph (around 65 km/h). The higher speed limit applies to tractors that have (among other requirements) all-wheel suspension, braking efficiency of 50%, pneumatic tyres, a speedometer and a horn. The exact requirements are contained in the Construction and Use Regulations 1986 (as amended)." - gov.uk
I do agree, if the tractor is breaking the speed limit and using a handheld device then he should be reported.
