Choose a Subject
- Joe Kerr (5th Nov 2020  09:52:20)

Just wondering is it possible to post a subject on this forum, that certain contributors could not use as an opportunity to score points against each other?

Here you go Ian, D, er, Rolli, Dawn, Penny, James, etc.....

Liphook in Bloom, I think we're all in unison on that one!

Joe there is a world of difference between scoring a point and making one or put it this way expressing an opinion - free speech? We fought two world wars to protect free speech - it is called democracy.

Careful, Joe Kerr. Batman and Robin will have you. Unless they have already of course.

Hi Penny,

All we need now is for somebody to contradict you to confirm my thoughts :)

Re: Choose a Subject
- er (5th Nov 2020  13:43:56)

Joe, you didn't really listen To Penny did you, she disagreed with your entire premise about point scoring, explaining to you very nicely that debate is about freedom of expression not point scoring, hopefully you learned something, you cannot just make a disparaging proposition and then claim to have proven it by a childish little test :)

- James (5th Nov 2020  13:51:59)

Hey,

I typically avoid boring subjects unless someone comments something stupid, disrespectful or discriminatory. So head for the threads I find boring.

I also agree with Penny. I don't do it to 'score points' I do it to express my views and educate the uneducated.

er,

Before claiming that I didn't listen to Penny, perhaps you should go to the trouble of correctly reading my reply to her.

I did not as you say, claim to have proven any point. I simply said in a friendly jocular way, that if anybody were to contradict Penny, then my thoughts would be confirmed.

I even added a smiley face to assist you with understanding that the comment was friendly.

Perhaps in your rush to score points against me, you did not have the time to correctly read, nor understand my message

Ha ha, nice one Joe, you called out 7 people by name and then act all innocent, you get all the points!

Re: Choose a Subject
- er (5th Nov 2020  15:47:24)

PS Joe did you see my smiley face too, nobody takes anything on this site too seriously, the ones that do are probably missing the point, it's chat and gossip, opinions and light relief with the odd lost cat, not the BBC, have a cup of tea and enjoy it, who knows maybe you were right all along :-)

ER unless you are the editor how do you know what the point of the website is?

Re: Choose a Subject
- MikeT (5th Nov 2020  19:37:44)

er
Either nobody takes anything on this site too seriously OR the ones that do are probably missing the point. My subject of choice has now become 'make your mind up which one it is'.

Any chance of a cuppa once you've decided the difference??

Re: Choose a Subject

Joe, that was my point you missed, it's opinion. Yes, Ed can (and does) come on and agree/ disagree/put people right etc and he can anytime he wants because it's his site, but I have noticed he tends to let opinions run when he can!

Mike, I did make clear what my opinion was, you are being pedantic!

For example, when someone comes on here and says 'The Anchor food is rubbish' and someone else says 'I love the anchor it's a great pub' these are opinions, not fact and anyone can debate them because people are not always right, we aren't professional debaters, but we all have a right to join in the discussion. Yes, I think Ed tends to be OK with that on here, if people thought these were statements of fact there would be potentially a lot of defamation issues! Although personally I never criticise a business on here as it's someone's livelihood.

But that said, I agree of course there are other types of posts on here that are factual (lost cats etc) and I wasn't referring to them, sorry I didn't make that clear, just seems to be the debate type of threads that I tend to get drawn into, because that's what they often do, make me (and others) want to agree/ disagree/ express an opinion, for some people anyway, not everyone has the same interests and it's no better/ worse than any other pastime, coming on here and reading people's opinions and deciding to offer one of your own back! Sadly those threads are the ones that so often go round and round and get nobody anywhere but het up, which is where I ended up by conceding that Joe was probably right all along!

But I don't think we should make people feel bad for expressing their opinions and enjoying this site and occasionally (trying) to put a coherent or intelligent argument across, in a civilised forum, that was the bit where I think Joe was wrong!

(ps sorry I haven't fact checked this for any errors but it's been a long day, just got back from work and all this is just opinion anyway Think I'll have that cuppa now, goodnight :)
