Free school lunches
- Mrs (24th Oct 2020 09:25:11)
Good morning Liphook,
I was just wondering if Liphook is doing anything regarding the free school lunches over the half term? due to the government not funding it.

Re: Free school lunches
- David (24th Oct 2020 14:33:39)
Outrageous that the schools and tax payers are not providing free meals whist the schools are closed. I know a lot of the eateries in the area are seeing massive drops in their turnover and income, many are only just keeping their heads above water but hey, there is a bottomless pit of dosh somewhere so I think all the food establishments in the area should take a bigger hit so as to feed the hoards of starving kids in the area.

- John (24th Oct 2020 14:54:23)
The easy solution would be for the selfservatives to find a pal with a small company with no expertise in food, give them a billion to provide free lunches for kids and then if this pal manages to spend say 10% of the money in any way correctly the kids will have free lunches.
Cue retaliation from the torys pasting me as a commie leftist etc

It is wonderful to see that lLiphook United football club is offering their services to make Free lunches for children.
It is a wonderfully kind and generous gesture and a superb use of the clubhouse.
I fully support them in their charitable endeavours in stepping into the breach that this inhumane government has left

We should be careful what we wish for. There was a time when if parents could not feed their children then those children would have been taken into care. Is it unreasonable to ask parents to take responsibility for their children for at least some of the time?
Mrs, there are free SCHOOL meals.

this isn't about parents
this is about kids in england right now
we should be ensuring kids in poor familes can eat
it's not politics
it's a human right
this is the worst cabinet and leadership since the dog day of mrs thatcher

Some of the kids around here look like they could do with missing a meal or two.

RRRR: Along with rights (e.g. free nutrition and education) come responsibilities (be able and willing to feed your own kids or don't have them) and respect (for the over-milked tax payer) and reason (if we are talking temporary starvation then bread and water would suffice).

Re: Free school lunches
- Mrs (25th Oct 2020 08:59:05)
Good morning D,
Could I ask you to re read my message, my question was in half term. I do understand that we have free school meals, but just wondering when the schools are shut?
Well done Liphook united, do you need anything? I am sorry to say I can't give my time but willing to donate anything you need.
On a another point, I do hope Boris like his freshly painted plane that has cost the tax payers ÂŁ900,000,000 Can you image how many school children this could feed???

Re: Free school lunches
- Sarah (25th Oct 2020 09:35:33)
I believe in Liphook, free lunches for children in need are being advertised by Liphook United at their clubhouse at the Rec, by L&S Coffee Shop in the square and by the Lazy Lizard in the Square. They have all made announcements in support of doing this on their Facebook pages.
Perhaps the bickering people above should stop bickering, so that anyone in need can find this relevant information amongst the annoying replies!

Re: Free school lunches
- James (25th Oct 2020 09:55:36)
D,
What is wrong with you? They are kids.
Some parents are struggling due to COVID and employment issues. It is the first responsibility of this government to care for its citizens. There is no type of discrimination in that. If a parent can not afford to put a meal on the table I am more than happy to put one there.
D, we live in a society with others, show some respect, and look after eachother.

Re: Free school lunches
- Ian 2 (25th Oct 2020 10:08:16)
If there was proper means testing then no-one would object to hungry children being fed by the tax payer but guaranteed if this free meals campaign succeeds it will be abused terribly. I suspect many people claiming they do not have enough money to feed their kids still have enough to pay for Sky TV, Netflix, mobile phone packages, fags, etc. A lot of us are having to cut the cloth at the moment but the tax payer is not a bottomless pit of money and unfortunately our welfare system is way to open to abuse.

Re: Free school lunches
- Anon (25th Oct 2020 10:12:47)
Am I missing something - can someone please tell me why are people are continuing to have children if they cannot afford to feed them? Surely one should live within their means. I am not saying children should go hungry - they shouldnât, itâs not their fault and I am happy to see the community helping but I think the problem is with people making choices without thinking of the future. Just watch David Attenboroughâs new documentary - there are too many people and the population is growing out of control and itâs not sustainable, we need to make sensible choices and also look at the route cause. If there wasnât all this support readily available perhaps having loads of children wouldnât be so appealing.
On another note, I also see many of these families that are claiming free meals for their children, are grossly overweight and have huge smart screen televisions and all the cool gadgets.

Re: Free school lunches
- D (25th Oct 2020 10:13:22)
Mrs, I understood your message clearly which is why I alluded to free SCHOOL meals. It has always been common practice for parents of free school meal qualification pupils to provide for them in school holidays.
Please remember we are all under financial strain at this time and to ask the over stretched tax payer for even more money is just plain selfish. Children have never been looked after by the state more than they are now.

In reply to D,
Yes I agree with you, but did it stop Boris having his plane painted? Are the house of commons still able to get free food?
Please don't get me started on handing out contract to friends and associates! The rich get richer and the poor just have to go with out.

Re: Free school lunches
- James (25th Oct 2020 10:59:16)
D,
The state has a responsibility to care for everyone. Some people have lost their jobs others have lost their partners that all changes their financial situation.
Sue,
Bread and water will not suffice. Bread is low in fat and protein the two main macronutrients we all need to survive.

Wow .
After seeing the kindness of MOST of our lovely local community come together to offer lunches for disadvantaged kids on socialmedia, I can see that the rest of the community post on here.
I hope that you never lose a husband or wife, or your job and find yourself in dire financial difficulties.

What alot of ranting.
Surprised nobody has mentioned the food bank yet !
Liphook food bank has posted on this site previously.
Is this can't cook, won't cook,I wonder..from parents who literally want it all on a plate [ excuse the pun].
No need for nasty bite backs either.

Re: Free school lunches
- D (25th Oct 2020 12:52:05)
Unfortunately circumstances change for some people. People who worked, paid taxes, claimed nothing. Took time to make sure they where financially stable before having a child. Fast forward 14 years, parent leaves, other parent has to give up work to look after child and has gone from being in a decent position of being able to feed and dress their child, to feeding and dressing the child and starving themselves. No I donât smoke or drink, have a car, or Sky or Netflix or even the internet. I have a mobile phone as that is the only way anyone has of contacting me.
Not everyone is a lazy layabout that pops out children, some worked hard and had a good life and something changed. This pandemic changed a lot of peopleâs lives and circumstances, that is not the childâs fault. But a child that goes hungry for days is not only a failure of a parent but society. As a parent who has to choose between meals for both of us or meals for my child and heating my money goes to them, and there is no feeling worse than failing your child.
So just take a moment before you throw you shouldnât have had it if you canât feed it. And maybe try a few days without food so you know what some kids and even parents have to face day after day, week after week.

Re: Free school lunches
- H (25th Oct 2020 17:37:11)
I expect I will get a lot of angry replies but I have never claimed benefit, yes, I have this year been very financially badly affected by covid, and when I have heard how much some families are able to claim in the way of benefits including housing, tax credits, personal independence payments, universal credits etc, which sometimes amount to 7 times my annual income, out of which I have had to pay all bills including a mortgage myself, it does make me wonder if people understand what true poverty is. We are lucky that we also have a free health service.
Of course some people fall through the cracks of the system, and cannot claim benefits due to their illegal entry into this country or otherwise but I have not seen any legitimate family who have not been housed or not have had access to food banks or food vouchers.
Some parents think making a nutritious meal is getting pizza and chips out of the freezer.

Re: Free school lunches
- David (25th Oct 2020 18:03:44)
I think everyone has a point.
I understand why the government have said no to the voucher scheme been extended. They give every family on benefits enough money to live on weekly. It's not the government fault that some of the familys would rather spend the money on phones fags drink and drugs knowing there children get a free school dinners so they only need to provide something small for tea when they get home. Ie a sandwich for most of them. But when it comes to school holidays a lot of children don't get a cooked meal throughout the time off school.
I know this to be true, growing up in the 70s and 80s as a child myself and my siblings had this battle every holiday. My stepfather was a alcoholic and when he got his dole money he spent the next few days in the pub pissing the money up the wall until he got the money again in 2 weeks time when it all started again. Not fun for us as children having to go without food . Sometimes it would take us as children 1 to 2 hours to pluck up the courage to as for something to eat. And I'm sure it still goes on today,This was not right then and still isn't right now .
We as children where so hungry we started shoplifting food to get something to eat, yes your right it not ok to steal but at the age of 10 and starving we had no choice
Looking from a child prospective they never asked to be born.
I've always said from a young age if the government did a voucher scheme that only allowed the parents to spend at the shops and gave a little extra in the holidays this would guaranty every child food at all times. This then can bring up another issue, the parents could sell the voucher for small amounts of cash to get there addictive substances.
If the government do issue a new voucher scheme then do it that it can only be redeemed by the person that's named on it and only food goods to be purchased..
I know it's a bit unusual for cafes and sports clubs to be offering free food for children on free school dinners especially when they at breaking point themselves but it never hurts to give something back to the community that gives to them every day. Lets just hope the good people dont abuse it. You never know what these places are doing could be good to help bring a broken society back together.
Im a great believer in what goes around comes around.

Re: Free school lunches
- er (25th Oct 2020 18:13:16)
Ian, so young people cannot have children in hope that their lives will be secure, in hope of a decent future, they must be wealthy first, there can be no risk or chance in love, kids for the rich only? I think that rules out most people under the age of 40 or whose parents aren't wealthy, the rest of us live life on the financial edge and chance says that some will be tipped over, not always through their own fault, no such thing as a job for life anymore, if humanity had followed this policy we wouldn't have got out of the trees, civilisation requires communal compassion and humanity to each other, just my thoughts but what are we otherwise?

Just because some here may not agree with the state providing free school meals during school holidays does not mean they are uncaring. Itâs easy to just look at this subject emotionally rather than objectively and intelligently.

The price of a baguette was under compete french goverment control right up to 1978 but it is still very much monitored and controlled by consumer associations so that everyone can afford it.
We in the UK are coming to terms with the idea of food poverty some 30-50 years later. Just goes to show you how utter far behind we actually are.
These impressions of the "empire" are the main reaso we are having so many issues! step out of this brainwashing for a small second and try to understand how similiar we actually are to the likes of North Korea and China you start to get a proper idea

If you're not horrible.
And you don't believe in the poor being stupid, feckless and morally deficient.
Then Liphook United Football Club are accepting donations by internet banking. If you contact them via the website then they'll give you the bank account number and sort code for you to pay an amount in.
What doesn't get used for free lunches will go towards the food bank.

If you think that children shouldn't go hungry in the holidays and would like to contribute towards the generous philanthropy displayed by Liphook football club - you can contact them using this form
liphook-united.org/home/contact-form
I'm not getting pulled into the 'If you can't feed them don't breed them' debate - only to say that people's situations change. People who were once financially secure may not be so now due to whole sectors collapsing. Regardless of their parent's situations - children should not be going hungry in 2020 in one of the richest countries in the developed world.
