The old Anchor Garage site
- Chris Wright (21st Sep 2020  12:51:08)

The old Anchor Garage site.
Having just read the article about the former Anchor Garage site in the Liphook Community Magazine penned by Gabrielle Pike, it strikes me that it is a shame it is in such an unsightly condition.
It would perhaps be a nice gesture to the people of Liphook for the current owner to board the front of the premises in order to allow any budding Liphook artists to demonstrate their skills. Perhaps the new owner could run a competition for the best artwork with a small prize.
It would demonstrate to the people of Liphook that the owners care about the environmental impact of the premises and also that they care how they are viewed by the population. After all, we will be their prospective customer base.

Totally agree with you!!! Board up and art work sounds awesome!! Place is a total eyesore, so is the site opposite the Green Dragon..... anyone know when work starts there again...?

Lets face it with COVID there will be no cinema.

You really think the owners of that building whom are probably neck deep in costs would see any value in spending another few thousand pounds to nicely board it up in the remote chance than doing so will win the hearts enough of us to re pay them in trade in a cinema that is looking like the most improbable business to succeed in the near future.

This isn’t the only derelict business in Liphook nor has been over history, in fact many current and still open businesses haven’t had a lick of paint in 20 odd years.

I think the request is lovely but you are complaining about something that is everywhere already yet you are singling this one business out? Prior to the cinema enterprise having a stalled go at the building it was sat rotting alone with zero plans to it then

British Rail seemed to follow a somewhat similar artistic policy in the 80s, which originated I think in the Bronx. I recall that Smash the Poll Tax was a popular theme over here.

Mind you we have our very own underrated Banksy as evidenced by the underpass, he'd win my vote for 'artist in residence' any day, maybe taking a group of otherwise bored teenagers under apprenticeship to draw more of those strange, but somehow endearing little characters. It would keep the youth out of the skatepark and annoying all the new residents!

Only problem I foresee is once the artwork is up, there will be others campaigning for it to be removed immediately! Thus is life in the London commuter belt.

Having read the article in the community magazine we are none the wiser. The article has been cobbled together from the living cinema website which has not been updated since the spring. There has been no word from the originator of the cinema business. Obviously not a good time to open a cinema.
