Nouveau Conservatives
- Mrs. Nelson (11th May 2005 - 15:43:17)

So fellow Conservatives, what do you think about Michael Howard's new young guns, Messrs. Osborne, Cameron and Duncan ? Can you see one of these becoming a leader able to turn New Labour into Old Hat in the next election??

I think the future's looking quite positive and we'll win next time :-)

Re: Nouveau Conservatives
- Alex Cameron (11th May 2005 - 19:03:24)

AAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Nouveau Conservatives
- Chris (11th May 2005 - 19:09:12)

Although I voted Tory I still wasn't entirely convinced about the current Tory image...still too much big business cronyism and not enough public appeal. But the new faces are welcome and may attract younger voters as well.
With labour's "experiment" with our education system acknowledged as a farce and many children horribly let down by the drop in standards I'll continue to vote Tory. The CRE may not be affiliated with any political party but it enjoys greater acknowledgement by the Howard gang than it does from Labour.

Re: Nouveau Conservatives
- Steve Read (12th May 2005 - 17:08:29)

I thought you all said you were going to win this time!

Re: Nouveau Conservatives
- Dick (15th May 2005 - 18:47:24)

So, because you have a few new, young faces you think the Tory party are on the up.

Labour had a few, new, young faces as well in 97, but they also had a bloody good manifesto. No matter what you think, they have done well.

Ok, so some of the main points in that manifesto have not come to total fruition but you must admit our economy is very, very good.

Remember, 18 years of Tory rule nearly brought this country to it's knees and the poll tax nearly brought anarchy in a big style.

If the Tories are to do anything in the future then they must concentrate on the main issues and not bang the drum about assylum seekers or personal slating.

Ah well, you have five years to prepare....

Re: Nouveau Conservatives
- Chris (16th May 2005 - 06:31:28)

I think people tend to forget after so many years of labour rule that the economy was back on its feet and doing well long before Blair became Prime Minister. It was also the Tories that applied the legislation that curbed and eventually ended one of the biggest internal and foreign business investment deterrants that this country ever had, the stranglehold and Mafia power of the unions. And as for the other big issues, education, the NHS, not to mention the trust lost over WMD and the Iraq war, the election results spoke volumes. Labour lost a lot of ground and the Tories began their revival. 2010 will be an interesting election year!

- Eneida (16th May 2005 - 07:28:01)

So Dick "the Conservatives brought this country to it's knees" did they ? LOL....Jim Callaghan, Trade Unions, Winter of Discontent ring any bells??

Never mind, this is the interesting bit - in this election the Conservatives got 58,000 more votes in England than Labour, although 92 less seats because of boundary changes.

Re: Nouveau Conservatives
- Alex Cameron (16th May 2005 - 08:46:26)

Chris' rant is almost word for word what was printed in the Daily Hate Mail, and Dick although i agree with a lot of what you've written on the site before, i'm afraid i absolutely have to take issue with the economy doing well.

£1 trillion of consumer debt is not good - borrowing is meant to keep the money moving in the right direction, but the time will come when we will be crushed under te weight of it. There are very few business leaders i know personally who aren't expecting a recession. The only diffference in their opinions is the exact time it will happen.

True, people's houses are worth more, but the costs of living are becoming prohibitively high. What's the use of having a good housee price when no-one can afford to buy it?

Re: Nouveau Conservatives
- Chris (16th May 2005 - 11:48:47)

So Alex you DO read the Mail...do you read Hello magazine on the quiet as well?

Re: Nouveau Conservatives
- Alex Cameron (16th May 2005 - 18:27:34)

My guilty secret is out :) Actually the point was originally covered in the latest private eye.

And no, i don't read 'Hello', but my other half does - we know a few people who show up almost every week, so its more a case of seeing what our friends are doing. Can't stand those types of mags myself, but Amanda is a literally the one-woman machine keeping them all in business.....!

Re: Nouveau Conservatives
- Steve Read (16th May 2005 - 21:15:04)

Ring any bells!
Boom and Bust Thatcher.
Sell off Council Properties and not replace. Thatcher.
Recession 1988 plus. Thatcher.
Poll Tax. Thatcher.
Good education for all (if you can afford it) Thatcher.
Good health service for all (if you can afford it) Thatcher.
Like I've said before many people do not forget.
Still its been a few days now since the Election how many new 'leaders' have the Tories mustered and lost can't wait for the next sacrilficial lamb offered up.

Re: Nouveau Conservatives
- Alex Cameron (17th May 2005 - 11:18:23)

Interesting parallels. Balir was of course a member of the conservative party for a long time before hijacking Labour.

Re: Nouveau Conservatives
- Chris (17th May 2005 - 12:45:21)

Yes, not many of us were keen on Thatcher, including me. But then if Calaghan hadn't skrewed everything up so decisively, (winter of discontent, strike after bloody strike, Grammar schools abolished etc. etc.) the country wouldn't have had to put up with her!

Re: Nouveau Conservatives
- Steve Read (17th May 2005 - 18:25:17)

I know Alex and even he saw the light !
Plus being leader of the Labour Party he could stay leader for more than a few weeks.

Re: Nouveau Conservatives
- Dick (17th May 2005 - 19:13:26)

I find it strange, that we Brits are never prepared to "See what Happens".
We have just had another General Election and Labour secured a third term. (Breaking News) And we are putting down all things to come before any of it has happened.
But more importantly, we are discussing issues that have been and gone. Let's face it the old adage of "You can please all of the people etc etc etc, always come to the fore.

What has been has been and there is no going back.
Thatcher is no more... Wilson is no more... Churchill is no more, but all of these so called great Prime Ministers are only remembered for the bad things that came out of their governments. There were many, many good things too but they are never raised in true political dialogue.

Blair has had success of that there is no doubt, but he obviously tarnished his reputation with the Iraq War. Quite what this has to do with British politics regarding Schools, Hospitals etc, I don't know.

Look at your front drives or in your garage... Nice Cars,
Look at the August calendar.. Nice Holiday Booked.

We aren't doing too badly are we ?

Re: Nouleau Conservatives
- Alex Cameron (21st May 2005 - 11:17:54)

But Dick, what is paying for all those lovely things? Is the cash you actually have in your wallet, or a loan, credit card and/or overdraft?

Its like a beautiful piece of music or a trifle dessert - nobody cares how it was made or the work that went into it. They only care about what it tastes like.

Re: Nouveau Conservatives
- Mike Grimes (21st May 2005 - 22:47:42)

... a bit like a waffle then?

Re: Nouveau Conservatives
- Dick (22nd May 2005 - 11:36:54)

Alex,

Yes, I agree, but that is the way we all live. We don't care too much about the pudding as long as we can eat it.

It is the punter that makes all these decisions. We don't have to have credit cards, Overdrafts etc, but we all want to live above our means.
You can't blame any government for that, it is Joe Public who creates the inflation, debt etc. (No offence to Joe)

Re: Nouveau Conservatives
- Alex Cameron (23rd May 2005 - 14:14:16)

Totally understood Dick - my point is that being able to borrow more money (currently at just over £1 trillion) doesn't equate to a healthy economy.

In fact, its false reasoning, and a specific strategy to avoid recession by keeping the money moving - and more importantly, there will come a day when the debts will become unsustainable just because our salaries won't match .

Re: Nouveau Conservatives
- Dick (23rd May 2005 - 19:11:30)

Alex,
The money can only be kept moving if the rest of the world is not in recession. We have done very well over the last two years to avoid being dragged in to the American recession unlike most other countries.

A trillion does sound like alot of dosh though..

Re: Nouveau Conservatives
- Steve Read (23rd May 2005 - 21:30:02)

Just wondering what our elected MP, you know the one on the front page of the herald declaring his stand on upholding democracy in this country has to say about the new "democratic" system of electing his partys leader.
