Pothole Warning and Advice
- Keith Thomas (10th Sep 2020 10:26:02)
I hit a major pothole last weekend driving from Wey Hill back to Liphook (couldn’t avoid it as there was a lorry coming towards me on the other side) . I’m just sitting at a Tesla service centre waiting for them to check a bad vibration and slow air loss on both of the two nearside tyres and am expecting to leave here with a big dent in my wallet.
Has anyone made a claim for pothole damage?

Yes - I made a claim for damage to an alloy wheel back in Feb. It got declined as they knew about the pothole and fixed it a couple of weeks later.
Didn't help me though!

Sorry to hear that you have had a damaging encounter with a pothole.
I think I know which one it was and I can confirm that this has been reported to West Sussex Highways. As a result someone has been out a sprayed a ring around it.
My understanding is that once this has been done they have to accept responsibility for any damage caused.
Suggest you make contact with them.

Successfully claimed a new tyre and filler foam through highways.
Didn’t compensate for inconvenience caused etc.
Car doesn’t carry any sort of a spare.
Slash to tyre so big foam filler poured in / out.....!
Simple to claim, form filling exercise and submissions of photos and receipts.
Roads are pretty shocking,no doubt they will turn to C19 excuses, for lack of maintenance!

Who did you claim off Mark? From what I can tell so far, the B2131 is the responsibility of Surrey County Council.
I’ve just been out to measure and photo the pothole, it’s 2 meters by 1 meter by 8 cm deep. It has a white line around it.
Two new wheels .... wait for it .... ÂŁ1464.00. Aaaaarrrrggghh!

You’re right Paul, it’s West Sussex. I’ve filed a claim now so will wait to hear what excuses they’ll find.

Always a problem with cars that have large wheels and very low profile tyres!
ÂŁ1400 sounds about right for the two wheels etc for a Tesla, they are after all one of the more expensive cars on the road, so would hope that if you can afford to buy one you would make sure you're fully covered with insurance?
Claim from WSC but make sure your insurance is full for the next time it happens would be my advice.

Re M
It is NOT an insurance claim for a pot hole.
It is the responsibility of the highways to maintain their roads.
I had no problems making my claim, for a second one too.

Agree Mark. One of the questions on the claim form was “Have you informed your car insurance and if not, why not?”. Told them that they were liable not my insurance, so I hadn’t.
Good to hear that you’ve had 2 successful claims. Were these with West Sussex?
