SKYPE
- Eneida (9th May 2005 - 08:57:32)

My uncle in Brazil wants me to install a Skype program on my computer so he can talk to me over the internet with a microphone. I must confess I don't know what he's talking about !

Has anyone got one of these and how does it work ?
Can you buy one in PC World ?

Sounds like Voice over IP to me.

It's free aswell so it sounds ok. I'm sure Mr Cameron will know all about this.

Oh and you need to make sure your modem has VOIP capability as not all do.

Mr Cameron sure does know about it because I have spoken to him on Skype myself! All absolutely free! Just download yourself the software from

http://www.skype.com/products/skype/windows/?autoload=true

and get a microphone headset! When your uncle is online too you just have to click on their name to dial it and free conversations for you over the interweb ;)

Aaah the first of my adoring fanclub :)

Skype is a bit like MSN Messenger, but its specifically for voice phone calls as opposed to just chatting. You can can landlines or mobiles with SkypeOut (when a call needs to go onto the normal phone network/PSTN, you encounter a charge), but calls between internet-connected users are totally 100% free of charge.

There are a tonne of accessories you can get that make it just like a normal telephone - headsets, USB telephones, bluetooth headsets etc. The key difference is that the call goes over the internet as opposed to BT's network.

My personal Skype username is 'azcameron' - i'm slowly transferring all my comms gear to work over IP. On the move that means iPaq with bluetooth headset as my phone (using Skype) and probably sipgate/asterisk combo for home tel network. VoIP rocks once you start to really drive it properly :)

Thanks everybody and especially Amanda!! You can always trust a woman to explain things logically ;-)

I'm off to PC world to get myself a head set - do they do purple ?

The one i bought Amanda was picked solely because it had purple bits on the headphones! :)
