Is there a footpath from Radford Park to Hewshott Lane?
- JD (15th Jul 2020 - 15:14:46)

The Ordnance Survey map suggests there might be a footpath that goes from the North-Eastern most corner of Radford Park and emerges on Hewshott Lane by the sharp bend.

This is the section in question:

bing.com/maps?...

I went in search of this today but it wasn't obvious. Is it an established path or did I just get lost!?

NB: There's a 'Private Property' sign on the fence to the field to the south: googlemaps....

The Detailed Old Victorian Ordnance Survey 6 inch to 1 mile Old Map (1888-1913) of Liphook, Hampshire, United Kingdom.

If you Google that, it might help, and is a fascinating map that you can scroll around the whole country of England

There is no footpath from Radford Park through to Marshes Hollow or Hewshott Lane.

Was in the past but was gated off with key for the residents, also incidentally a path at the A3 end of Hewshott Lane which is long gone which lead to Bramshott Common parallel to the private road, now relocated onto the A3 itself, there are some steps which lead down to the carriageway, crazy, only ways now to walk to Hewshott Lane is to walk to the London Road and past the Old Folks village or up the very rutted hill that goes under the Manor footbridge (whatever that lane is called) left off the Haslemere Road (before the Railway Bridge), not a great walk but there is a narrow verge (can you follow the river from Radford to there, don't know, maybe someone does), oh you can also go under the Railway Bridge, first footpath left and then left again under the railway and past the Fishing Lake, but who would want to walk under the railway bridge. Sorry if this is a bit convoluted these are the only ways I've come up with, definitely crying out for a footpath from Radford!

For those on a mobile device, the link to the map I posted earlier may not show the Ordnance Survey overlay on Bing maps I was looking at.

If you take a look at the OS map vie won Bing maps, it definitely looks as though there's a footpath that comes out at the property on Hewshott Lane marked as 'Lodge'. Google streetview tells me this is Parsley Cottage.

Is the footpath on the OS an error or has it been fenced off?

(I took a look at the Victorian map and there isn't a footpath on this same route).

YES there are two footpaths that go out to hewshott lane

We had the recent pleasure of emerging from Bramshott Common along the footpath and in to the A3! Whoever thought that was a safe idea? Absolutely ridiculous. We had to walk along the verge of the A3 and then up the slip road with cars zooming past us. There used to be a path from the common onto Hewshott Lane but it is now blocked with a 10 foot high fence and the path diverts down onto the A3.

Zoe, thanks for this info and the info on the other thread about the caves which was very interesting.

I didn't realise there was a footpath on Hewshott Lane just beyond the first bend at the A3 end that leads to the caravan park, I will try that one out one day soon hopefully because it must be a good link to Bramshott Common.

Re Marshes Hollow is that the steep lane that goes from Haslemere road to Hewshott lane just below Hewshott Grove?

I'm interested to hear that there used to be a path from there to Radford Park, I hoped there might be but have never ventured to find out (too brambly). I wonder if the right of way has been lost now? It would be a great route to Hewshott Lane avoiding Haslemere road.

I feel there are so many beautiful commons all around of us, almost within reach by walking but most of them have at least one nasty stretch of 'A' road to get to, Lynchmere Common is another great example, but most of us drive to get to these places because walking is too convoluted or dangerous, such a shame.

Devils Lane is another great example, very accessible from the Haslemere Road, you hope it would lead to another path that would take you towards Lynchmere Common or Iron Hill, but how can you walk along Highfield Lane or the main Liphook Road towards Haslemere, so in effect Devils lane leads nowhere but back into the village!

Oh well, first world problems I guess!

ER
Yes the path past the caravan park leads to Bramshott Common. It's a lovely walk.

You turn left through the farm / caravan park (keep dogs on lead) - go along tarmac road and it leads straight out into the woods onto the common.

There is a path that runs parallel to the A3 and leads to an underrpass that goes under the A3 onto the common the other side. (Underpass is just past the layby/parking for the Canadian memorial on the A3 - if walking in direction of the Hindhead Tunnel)

Hi,
Thanks so much for the responses.

I've found lthis resource which shows the area in question in detail.

maps.hants.gov.uk/rightsofwaydefinitivemap

Search for: GU30 7SS (select the top address, annexe, Longmeadow... which will give you the map view in question).

This displays all footpaths and bridleways in the area. It also lists "paths".

I'm looking at "Tile Name: 21.15" and can clearly see a dashed line labeled "path" from Radford Park which crosses the boundary at the South East corner of Penally Parm, skirts the woodland and joins up with the driveway of Parsley Cottage which, in turn, leads on top Hewshott lane.

I appreciate this may not legally be a 'footpath' but nor, it seems, would any of the paths in Radford Park be classed as 'footpaths'.

Therefore, if a "path" is clearly marked on the map (and the OS map it's drawn as a footpath) can the public use it as a right of way?

Put another way, why is it fine to walk on a "path" in Radford park but not the "path" drawn on this map?

The area in question is two fields to the east of the retirement village, so it's not a path that goes anywhere close to there.

I'm aware that there's only access through to the retirement village via a gate (code needed).

Re: Is there a footpath from Radford Park to Hewshott Lane?
- Simon Coyte (20th Jul 2020 - 17:08:00)

The path was a path on private land and never a public right of way. The path shown on old maps was a track to access land that was grazing of Hewshott lane down to the edge of what is now Radford park.
The footpath that is gated by the pond was the old access to the Hospital and was again never a public right of way.
The Parish council have recently adopted a new strategy document for the future preservation and enhancement of Radford park. The land between the main path at the eastern end of the park is designated a wildlife area. Will not to be changed except to improve its natural habitat and biodiversity.

Sorry last paragraph of previous post should have read
Between eastern end of main path and the eastern boundary of the park is designated a wildlife area.

Hi there,

I just thought I would help put this matter to bed, I am the owner of the house formally known as Parsley Cottage, to which this thread appears to be about.

We, when purchasing the property saw the map in question and as you may guess asked our solicitor Potter Owtram & Peck in Haslemere who advised that as per Councillor Simon Coytes message above there is no 'Public' right of way over this property and indeed there never has been!

There are plenty of paths in the area and some lovely walks as mentioned in this thread but not one across the land I own.

Best regards

LB: thanks so much for the post. This definitely clarifies it!
I'm glad it wasn't just me that saw the path marked on the map, though!
Don't worry; I don't think you'll have an influx of ramblers across your land as a result of this thread :-)

Simon: Thanks too for your input! Glad to hear wildlife in this area is being promoted!

The Ordnance Survey maps that mark public rights of way have, beneath the "Public Rights of Way" section, the following statement:-
" The representation on this map of any other road, track or path is no evidence of the existance of a right of way ".

Re: Is there a footpath from Radford Park to Hewshott Lane?
- er (21st Jul 2020 - 15:32:28)

Agree with above comments. the absence of a right of way through Radford to Marshes Hollow is not a great loss as there is a footpath of sorts along Haslemere Road to there and you'd need a machete to get to it via Radford Park anyway, so the privacy of the cottage there should be respected.

However I feel the lack of a footpath from Radford to Hewshott Lane is a great pity and could the parish or county council look to negotiating with local landlords for a small footway that would make the walk to Bramshott Common a possibility from Radford, maybe running along the northside of Radford park and then a short stretch by the side of the private field to bring you out on the bend very close to Old barn farm (where I believe there's a public footpath to the common). in this day and age is there any money to invest in such a simple thing that would benefit so many?
