Where are the caves? Are you referring to the derelict buildings that are half underground at the back of the park or are there some caves somewhere else? Intrigued. I only use the paths.

Going back further my dad worked for Auther Allee before the war. When he returned in 1946 we came back to Liphook to Allees Farm. Mr Allee owned the farm opposite Tower Road London Road the big oak tree at the top of the farm road was in the middle of the farm yard. All the land up to the rec down to malt house meadows all of Radford Park across London Road to Tunbridge Lane up to Headley Road was owned by Mr Allee. As a 5year old it was a fantastic play ground. In my teens I cut the water meadows for hay with Mr Allees tractor. Us lads used to skate on the ponds. The river used to wind its way through the valley and under the A 3 at Radford Bridge.Late 50 the London Road end of Radford Park was opened up for a dump every thing seemed to end up there. Cars motorcycles you name it.When the bypass was built Archie Derry with a lots help cleared it and all the soil from the bypass built it up.Fantastic Old days could go on for hours but I’m rambling Liphook’s such a great place to live.

What3words would be very useful... I've been looking for these caves with my children but never managed to find them!

I could listen to you all day, Russ. Have you thought of writing a book or something? I would certainly be interested. You would remember when Bohunt School was Luff's Farm as well then?

Zoe
"The people at Marshes Hollow" have not let anything overgrow in the woods as it has never been owned by us and there has never been a path through Marshes Hollow . I know this as I have lived here for 60years.

Hi all didn’t realise there was so much interest in the past of Liphook. Having lived and worked here all my life apart from the first 5 years because of Mr Hitler.
My dad and Grandfather were here before me Grandad First World War I’m 3rd and have 3 more generations after me.
Zoe the land running through to Tunbridge Lane was water meadows but also had the Abattoir (slaughter house) at the end of the road going in by lucky that’s another long story.
D yes I remember all the lovely things about Liphook it was such a lovely place back in the late 40s 50s. As for a book my Wife Irene’s brother Derek Holdsworth a very much Liphook man was writing his memories of Bramshott School but he passed away before finishing it so my Wife took on the job of finishing it for the Heritage centre. There was not enough material so myself and my wife along with others have added our stories it is at the printers at the moment. Hopefully it will be in the Heritage centre when it opens again well worth a read.

Hi Zoe,
This is not relevant to the subject matter but I just wanted to point out that your father's first cousins are not your 2nd cousins, they are your first cousins but one generation above you, which is described as "first cousins once removed".
Your 2nd cousins would be the children of your parent's cousins, ie the same generation as you.

Thanks everyone. Very interesting.
Zoe be careful with the Japanese Knotweed under the A3 when you do your loop.
I love that walk too.
As for cousins - what is your cousin's child called? I always thought that was a second cousin.

Terry. thanks for the What3Words pin.
I went exploring and found the caves at:
what3words.com/scorpions.armful.likes
Looks like the area's used as a hangout; evidenced by the piles of litter inside and in the vicinity. Such a shame!

Me and my friends use the caves as an amazing place to go and just chill and even as a group of teens think it’s a shame about the littering that happens there.
The history we know of:
As far as we could find out the caves that are there now are only a part of what used to be. There were 3 at one stage but they got filled in. A hospital back in the 1900’s closed as it was supposedly haunted. It was located in the field above the caves and all the waste from the place was dumped in the caves and then filled with soil and rocks to what it is today. Back when the caves where still left untouched, they went for miles underground and there were maps to guide people around them, according to the person I work with who used to go there with their friends.
That’s all the info me and my friends could find out about them. Hope it’s useful!

Hello Kate. I think the hospital you refer to was King Georges' Sanatorium, demolished not long ago. What you describe is very similar to what my grandmother used to tell me, I used to think it was a means of stopping me wandering too far. Must be some truth in it, though, if others have heard it too. Interesting post, thanks.
