Highways, byways and transport
- Dawn Hoskins (11th Jun 2011 - 15:34:05)

Hi all
There is a meeting on Monday 13th. I haven\'t remembered to put it on the agenda but will raise the issue of the bad state of the slip road from the A3 into the village.

Are there any other points anyone wishes to have discussed in the \'any other business\' section of the meeting?

if so, post here or email me.

Dawn

Hello Dawn,
Please could you find out if we could have more signs for the shops in Station Road,Liphook?
There is one when you go from the Square to the Links along Portsmouth Road but the tall hedge almost covers it up.
I await your reply.
Thanks you,
Sudha

Hi Dawn,
Is it in your remit to get anything done about the parking on the corner of the old A3 and Station Road before there is a serious accident there.?

Re: Highways, byways and transport
- Richard Hartland (12th Jun 2011 - 21:53:20)

How about a 20 mph speed limit for the much abused residents of Church road who have to put up with all the inconsiderant drivers using Bramshott as a Liphook bypass?

Re the junction of Station Road with Portsmouth Road.

It is as well to remind all here that there was a potential fatality at this junction on last Carnival Saturday when a motorcyclist was knocked off his bike by a vehicle.

In my opinion this was entirely due to the vehicles parked on the Portsmouth Road outside the new flats obscuring the junction.

I am told that there is parking at the rear of these flats for residents but I suspect that some of the vehicles belong to railway commutors as they remain there all day.

- Dave (13th Jun 2011 - 09:12:23)

Double yellow lines would be a simple solution. I do however believe it is an offence to park within 20 meters of a junction.

Re: Highways, byways and transport
- BDavies (13th Jun 2011 - 10:13:16)

Dawn, can you advise/pursue the issue of speed restrictions and the traffic calming measures that were promised? Not only in the environs of the village centre but also the incoming and outgoing routes where dangerous and irresponsible driving is prevelant (Longmoor Rd, Headley Rd/Hill House Hill, Haslemere Rd, Portsmouth Rd).

With respect to the parking near Station Road, the police were informed about this during the construction of the flats and did nothing (construction vehicals were often backed up all along this road). We need double yellow lines to be placed there.

Re: Highways, byways and transport
- Dave (13th Jun 2011 - 13:01:43)

Also, Dawn, the Longmoor Road really should be 40mph all the way from the existing 40mph limit to the A3. I have raised this on this forum before and had some bizarre objections but, given all the traffic going to Old Thorns and the increase in traffic turning off on the old Longmoor Road, this needs to be changed and enforced BEFORE someone else is killed. I understand there have been fatalities previously but don't have access to details so please correct me if I am wrong about this.

Well,
What an amazing response. Thank you all for your input. I will print out and present at the committee meeting tonight.

Please feel free to attend. The new Parish Council is making every effort to encourage members of the public to take an active role in attending and raising questions etc.

Might be a bit late sorry I meant to add this yesterday.

I agree with the comment of parking on the junction between Station Road/Portsmouth Road, it use to be a double yellow when the Jet garage was there. It isn't all residents as Paul says, its commuters which makes it difficult for residents to see to pull in and out of our driveways. The speed between these park cars is also an issue as people seem to have no patience or any idea of the rules of the road as to whose right of way it is.

Another area that needs addressing is the state of the overhanging trees and hedges along all pavements around the village. My husband and I walk around the village alot and its becoming more and more overgrown. I think most of this is the property owners responsibility but I think the council can ask them all to trim the hedges. We had walk to school week in May and it was very difficult to walk two abreast as its so over grown.

Re Overhanging trees on Paths

I spoke to the Deputy Clerk about this matter today and she said that if you report a particular problem to the Parish Office they will refer the matter to the County Council who will arrange for the offended branches to be lopped and the waste taken away.

Where the problem is found to be the responsibility of a particular householder they will be asked to cut the hedge /tree/ shrub back.

I hope this helps.

I agree with the plea to stop parking outside the new flats. It is so dangerous to drive a long stretch without many gaps to pull in when you do meet cars coming up from Petersfield direction. Could I also add a plea to the owners of the fields (Bohunt Manor?) with hedgerows that are overgrown preventing a clear line of sight to the right as you exit the road leading from the Church Centre on Portsmouth Road. Please strim the bracken back.

just picked up on this thread on above topic.
still havent seen any minutes since 13 june so have the concerns raised been addressed? and if so what was proposed?

Re: Highways, byways and transport
- Richard (6th Nov 2011 - 21:50:37)

I refer to my previous post regarding traffic in Church Road. Everything from 44 ton trucks and white van man using Bramshott as a bypass for Passfield and places beyond. Please refer it on to HCC road safety dept, dont just sit on your hands.

Re: Highways, byways and transport
- Jeanette (6th Nov 2011 - 22:51:11)

Richard
Have you read the Bramshott Bugle yet? We are trying to get a speed limit in Bramshott and also have sat navs re-routed. I contacted the council a while back and they put up an Unsuitable for HGVs sign at the entrance to Church Road but drivers ignore that and blindly follow their satnavs. When the road was closed for a week or so to have a collapsed drain repaired it was bliss!

Re: Highways, byways and transport
- helen (7th Nov 2011 - 10:28:04)

I think the residents of Bramshott would not get any deliveries to their houses if lorries were banned. Apart from signage which does not seem to work, what would you suggest?

Re: Highways, byways and transport
- liz (7th Nov 2011 - 11:39:14)

Very glad the A3 sliproad is being addressed- very dangerous at present. Not sure a speed limit through Bramshott would make any difference, v difficult to enforce. Those who would obey it no doubt already drive sensibly.

I was amused by the proposed speed limit in Church Road - lucky to get up to 20 mph due to parked cars etc. (Not a complaint just a fact!). Speed limits would make no difference in my opinion and just lead to a host of ugly signs of which we already have too many. (Reminds me of Ogden Nash "Perhaps, unless the billboards fall, I'll never see a tree at all") Speed bumps might help? Re-routing on satnav would be excellent if feasible.

Re: Highways, byways and transport
- Jeanette (7th Nov 2011 - 19:00:03)

Bramshott residents have never suggested a ban on lorries, just rerouting of those using it as a through route to get to Passfield and beyond. The sign says Unsuitable. At present they have to go all the way through narrow sunken lanes and tight bends and then on to the main road at a dangerous junction at Tunbridge Lane. We've had houses, vehicles and power lines damaged and it's impossible to walk through the village.

Vehicles do travel at speed through Church Road because they enter the village at speed after coming from either the A3 or London Road. Vehicles leaving the village really speed up as soon as the drivers see the road widen slightly and the A3 beckons. If these inconsiderate drivers are going to ignore a speed sign then maybe we do need a physical deterrent such as speed bumps or road narrowing near the entrance.

Re: Highways, byways and transport
- Sarah (7th Nov 2011 - 21:21:35)

Richard and Jeanette

I can imagine that you do get a horrible amount of traffic through Bramshott and I have myself witnessed insane driving along the narrow lanes. To an extent, you have my full sympathy. However, it seems unfair to blame the residents of Passfield for this (I do note that you say 'and beyond'). I am a Passfield resident and I live off Passfield Rd - the Bramshott roads lead directly to my road. Why do I not have the right to use these roads for the purpose in which they were built? Since I live off a lane myself I do not drive like a maniac and I am slow and careful in my driving. I assume you would rather that I drove through Liphook and back out again rather than through Bramshott which runs straight to my home?

As a resident of Passfield Rd, I am sure you can imagine that we too are troubled by all sorts of ratrunners, many of whom are heading in the direction of Bramshott (and beyond). Can you assure me that you do not use Passfield Rd or Tunbridge Lane as a ratrun to reach your own homes, but rather drive through Liphook and back to Bramshott? It works both ways.

I am not trying to be flippant or unsympathetic, anyone living in lanes in the area suffers from rat runners and large vehicles on unsuitable roads and it does need to be addressed. But please don't keep mentioning Passfield residents as the main cause - we have some right to use the roads that run from Bramshott directly to our homes - we are not using them as a rat run and most consider these roads to be local roads and use them suitably.

Re: Highways, byways and transport
- Jeanette (8th Nov 2011 - 00:26:20)

Sarah
None of my comments were intended to imply that the roads of Bramshott should be used by residents only. My concern is for safety and common sense. Any driver travelling at excess speed, inappropriate for narrow lanes with parked cars and no pavements make it extremely hazardous and frightening for anyone trying to walk around the village. Some lorries have found it impossible to get through and have then had to reverse along those same narrow lanes. Surely it would benefit those drivers if they were directed along roads more suited to the size of the vehicle.

Re: Highways, byways and transport
- helen (8th Nov 2011 - 01:29:36)

I do not understand why you think that a lorry uses the route through Bramshott from their satnav? I think someone ought to put it to the test? I cannot imagine that the satnav directs people through Bramshott as the quickest route to the A3?, I am a local driver and need to get to work in Bramshott and I cannot say that it is a quicker route to Passfield from Liphook? Cars and lorries are a problem everywhere and will get worse if they build the eco town. Speed bumps are a nightmare for low cars and not much of a deterrent for lorries! Speed bumps in Church rd would not help the amount of parked cars there already.

Re: Highways, byways and transport
- Jeanette (8th Nov 2011 - 06:41:34)

Helen

The problem with lorries arises when they exit the A3 at the Liphook/Bramshott slip road. Whether they use satnavs or a map, the shortest route shall we say to Bordon and beyond, guides them through Bramshott. I know this for a fact because I talk to the drivers who sit in Church Road deliberating whether to keep on driving or turn back because they can suddenly see the road narrowing!

Of course speed bumps aren't going to help parked cars. What are you suggesting? - that all the residents remove their vehicles from the road to enable the ignorant drivers a clear run to go even faster through the village!

Bramshott has narrow, sunken lanes of historical importance with old properties built close to the edge of the road so road widening is not an option. If society breeds inconsiderate drivers hell bent on getting from A to B in the shortest possible time not caring whether they kill or maim someone in the meantime then a physical solution is what is needed. Why do the council bother to move the 30 mph warning sign around the village if we get wimpy answers like yours saying oh dont bother because they are only going to ignore it!
