Garden expert

hi,

I have in my garden a weed that spreads like wildfire every year and I cannot get rid of it. It starts as a very small leaf covering the ground and I use weedall to get rid but it still comes back ..on planting annuals within about six weeks it comes and chokes all the flowers.

It is like a very small leaf with a very small white/pink flower ..it just takes over the whole border so I have to remove annuals as it creaps round them all so you cannot see the ones I have planted ...does anyone out there know what it is and how to get rid of it ..it is driving me crazy

thanks

Can you identify it from these pictures www.theseedsite.co.uk/weeds2.html

Might it be a Thyme-leaved speedwell, or a redshank or maybe henbit?

Wildflowers are good for butterflies though :)

Hello.

Could it be ground elder? It has a small white flower in summer, so not sure if this is too early for it to be flowering, but it is a nightmare. Very hard to get rid of because the slightest bit left in the soil just regenerates.

My grandad used to say the only way to get rid of it was to grow potatoes in the bed for a few years! Not sure if that's true and not much help I'm sure, but it is a nightmare weed.
Basically it needs very careful digging out to remove all roots etc. Hope this helps.

Gosh...I'm impressed that people know the name of weeds - I am still struggling to get to grips with the name of plants in my garden!! Is there a Liphook gardeners society? I would love some of this free advice that's going around. I could do with a few gardening tips and advice, perhaps a garden consultation with a local expert.

Perhaps we need to start a Gardeners Club if there isn't already one?

All gardeners should be aware that at this time of year thefts occur from sheds and garages. I have recently become a victim, some very expensive power tools have been stolen from my outside shed. I know that we are in a recession and all hard up but however hard up I was I would rather obtain things honestly than steal from other householders.

Jane

There is Bramshott, Liphook and District Horticultural Society.
Contact Ian Haussauer on 01428 723045 or ian.p.haussauer@btinternet.com

We have three show a year and regular talks and occasional trips. Membership is about £7.50 a year (but I've probably got that wrong) and gives discounts at Springfield Garden Centre, Brook Garden Centre and others.

Hi everyone . thankyou for all your replys ... looking at the pics the editor sent it could be hairy bitter cress or chick weed ..hard to tell .. getting rid of it is a nightmare .. it is annual and the more you disturb the soil the more it spreads.after about 4 years I have given up planting plants as it is a wase of time and money, so have put it to gravel ...some earth was moved from the front to a border in the, back , now that is full of the weed , which is a bummer . It is driving me insane But I will keep trying ...I may put some in a tray and watch it grow it grows about a foot high inter tangerling over the flowers... I have sprayed it with weed killer today ..so lets wait and see..I am no good at naming weeds only the most commen ones
