Cycle route to Guildford
- Sharon (24th May 2011 - 16:38:42)

Hi

Does anyone know a good route to cycle to Guildford (Godalming side)? The roads are not pleasant in the morning rush hour! Either quieter roads or off-road.

Thanks

No good routes, as far as I can tell, and I have considered it at length many times, thinking I could get off the train at Guildford or Godalming and pootle home.

The most direct (other than the A3) is the A-road via Haslemere and Godalming. Busy but not narrow. There's cycle provision (lanes) from Godalming to Guildford but nowhere else.

A cunning route would be via Passfirld, Churt and Elstead, then probably across the A3 to Godalming and as above. But it's narrow and popular with cars avoiding Hindhead there's a lot of drivers going too fast.

A route that I haven't tried but looks OK on google maps would be to Haslemere, then GRayswood, then set off NE on minor road (prestwick lane) to Wormsley, then another minor road (Hambledon Ln) to Godalming, then as above to Guildford.

The best route (but longer than a crow flying) would be to try to link up with national cycle route 22 which goes from around Bordon/Lindford area to Guildford via Farnham and Puttenham. Its likely to be on quiet country roads or clean tracks. Google it or look on a recent OS map.

There's also quiet routes and bridleways plotted at http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/projects/8083.htm

Of course in a month or two, things will change, as the old A3 is destined to be a shiny new cycle route, making it possible to link to places in surrey over Hindhead on mainly off road routes. Hurrah

Hope that helps.

That's great, thanks for that. I will look at the map!
