General Election - Who's going to win?
- Alex Cameron (12th Apr 2005 - 21:54:34)
An obvious question, but i'm wondering whether Liphook will sustain its 'true blue' status in the wake of the Iraq war and Mr Arbuthnot's late arrival into the SWT debacle.
Its been a hairy few days for me personally as the Tories recent successes (through the Aussie spin guru who won conservative Aussie Howard his seat back) have made me rethink whether they could win. Michael Howard's (MP, Translyvania South) own seat might be an interesting spectacle i'm told....
Just in case anyone was wondering, there are apparently over 300 political parties contesting this particular election. My prediction is that Blair will win by a slither, with the Lib Dems making huge gains. Not enough time has past for the Tories to be trusted again - this is the last labour government for a while though. But naturally i could be way off the mark...

Well, Mr Arbuthnot's election flyer arrived today (personally delivered by Mr Barry Hope, no less) and it seems his number two priority is to get a better deal for local commuters.
His number three priority is to reduce council tax for pensioner households and to make it fairer for all. Well how does that work then? I'm not a pensioner.
His first priority is to see that house building decisions are retuned to the local people. This presumably means those that already have houses.
Alex, I now come to your prediction and I find this incredibly weird as I think this is the same as mine and loads of other people across the country. Why is it that everybody predicts that this will be the last Labour Government in the series (because they are going to screw up big time - this time) yet still vote for them?
Oh for a system where you have to earn your vote. Everyone might be equal, but their opinions do not necessarily merit equal weight.

I sincerely hope you are way off the mark, Alex!
There's nothing I would like more than to wipe the smiles off the faces of these con-artists running the country at the moment. Especially 'Dr.' Reid, what a ghastly, smirking specimen!
I like the Conservative manifesto, it's full of common sense. Since it will be the first time I'll be able to vote I'm certainly going "true blue and Mrs. Crew"!!

Labour will win but only just and it will be their last stint in charge.
I shall support the reds (football wise) but vote for the blues (government party wise) as usual.

So i'm hot on the pulse? A career in politics awaits..;)
I think one of the strongest factors that make this the last labour government for a while is people's general resistance to change - we only want to upset the apple cart when its absolutely necessary. The 'head in the sand' approach to dealing with problems. Why would any politician work to integrate proportional representation into the parliamentary process when it would see a possible decrease in their share of power and/or cause maximum upheaval without paying for itself in votes?
Blair hasn't quite offended enough people so directly in their ordinary personal lives that they are compelled to revolt - he's certainly very close though. Nobody can doubt the man is a skilled politician. And as i said earlier, not enough time seems to have past for the public to trust the conservatives with public office yet. The lib dems seem to be considerably more credible than before, but not serious enough yet to have shaken off their 'loser' colours and be seen to be ready to take on the responsibility of government. As always, it would seem to be the case of the lesser of the established evils.
I've always assumed people vote for the party that aligns with their personal values - hence Eneida's allegiance to 'common sense'. Maybe i'm wrong here, but it is interesting that people's apathy and/or sense of powerlessness will possibly lead them to vote for those they don't like or believe in.
A few of my biggest concerns with this government are their obsession with control orders (ASBOs, house arrest etc), their total disregard for the countryside, their total utter failure at technology, their reliance on national databases and of course, their encouragement of personal debt to avoid recession.
