Christmas Fair
- WENDY (24th Nov 2019 - 10:04:22)
We went to the Christmas Fair at the Milennium Hall yesterday. It was very attractive with loads of stalls, and a really good crowd. The choir was very entertaining, and very talented. We would have bought quite a few items, but found them very expensive, for example, £6 for one artificial rose seemed an awful lot of money. We supported the lucky dip run by the WI, and were horrified at the amount of plastic bags they put the items in. Surely, the things could have been put in paper bags? we are all trying to avoid plastic, and with such a good, solid reputation I though the WI would have supported everyones efforts. Bring the prices down, and use paper instead of plastic and we will be more supportive next year.

I would also slightly question why this event is held so far before Christmas (ie not even in December)?

We are pleased you enjoyed the atmosphere at Liphook Village Market's Christmas Event at the Millennium Centre yesterday.
The Village Market has operated from the Millennium Centre for the past six years, it's ethos being to provide a platform for local crafters and makers to sell their wares, we are a non profit making organisation, support local charities wherever possible and unlike other markets of a similar nature charge no entry fee
Pricing of goods is purely down to individual stall holders, but what is not often appreciated is that hand-crafted goods of whatever form cost more to produce than similar massed produced items which are found on the high street.
Hand-made does not always equate to low prices, all stall holders are fully aware if the correct price including labour and materials were charged they would in-fact sell very little and as such they try to keep their prices at a reasonable level.
Concerns over individual items should be taken up with the relevant stall holder concerned, who I am sure would have provided you with an explanation.
In reply to C's comment
The date chosen for this event falls between our November and December regular markets as it has done for the past 6 years, bearing in mind that many folk have already started their Christmas shopping, the end of November seems an ideal time to offer people the opportunity of purchasing gifts they cannot buy on the high street. Whereas the 2nd weekend in December for many would be too late. To our knowledge there were at least two other Christmas Market's being held in the locality yesterday, and there are two further markets in Liphook alone next weekend.
I would add, as was said to me personally yesterday by at least two people, Liphook Village Market's Christmas Event at the end of November. always marks the start of their Christmas.

The date is about right.
I attend the regular market, as a stall-holder, but couldn't attend the Christmas one as already booked at Guildford Cathedral Christmas Market (two day event). Also on Sunday I was at chocolate Frog Company on Oakhanger, at their Christmas Market.
Have already attended two other "Christmas Markets" - so having the Liphook Artisan Village Market in late November is by no means "early".

Great event, keep up the good work, such a lot of choice, I went to a market yesterday and a toilet roll holder cost £30, I have been to others where you are hard pressed to find items under £25.
Please think about the hard work that has gone into items. Looking forward to the event on Saturday 14th December

Trouble is in UK not enough Kudos given to our great crafts people ,who spend hours to bring us something handmade - usually at good prices - quite often below shop prices for something made with a great deal of attention. As a point of note looked on line today single fabric Roses between £1.47 Very cheap looking - John Lewis £8.00 each ( Mass produced) - So £6.00 doesn't seem bad at the fair - ( I believe Stall Holders also have to try & cover cost of their stall, I'm sure in some of the leaner months they don't manage that )
Please support your local Crafts People!! -

Thank you so much to all the lovely people who support the Liphook Market.
So many sensible things said about the pricing of items and the date that there is nothing more to add from me except to say hope to see you on December 14th and wishing you a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year
