Hi R

Sounds chaotic, to say the least!

I take it that your laptop is much newer than your Packard Bell PC? To help, we all need a little more information, but my bet is that your old PC runs Windows 95/98/Me, whereas the laptop runs Windows XP.

How old is the Packard Bell? What is the processor speed in MHz, the RAM and/or the hard drive size? (Right click 'My Computer', then click 'Properties').

What patches did you put on the PC? What make/model of USB 2.0 PCI card and/or ethernet adaptor did you buy? What error messages (if any) did you get (i.e. did the cards not install properly)? What make of belkin router did you buy? Are you trying to connect via wireless or through wires (ethernet cable)?

The speedtouch general installs well on computers running on Windows XP (as do most other USB devices), but earlier versions of Windows suck, big-time. Not sure on how you want to set up your home network, but i'd hope the Belkin router is a combined adsl modem, lan router, wi-fi access point, firewall and DHCP server.

Always ready for a challenge!

The Belkin router is a 802.11g 54Mbps Router 2.4Ghz wireless. I dont know if it is a DHCP server and asdl combined. My Packard Bell was Win 98 but was put XP service pack 1 home a year ago. The packard bell has 60.0 Mb of RAM it says and 550Mhz processor and a 20g hard drive. The PCI usb ports are a D-Link 2 port USB 2.0 PCI adaptor.

thanks

Can the PC see the adsl router when you plug it in? If yes in device manager (ctrlpanel/system/hardware/device manager) does the device appear to be working correctly?

i have not plugged the router in because i wanted to get the speedtouch modem working first.

That sounds like quite an old PC, and i'm assuming that it has Win XP if you put SP1 on it. To put the speedtouch via the PCI USB card, you need to make sure the PCI card is successfully installed first. Does the PC have USB ports in other places than the new card?

First things first - getting the speedtouch to work through the PC. There could be a number of things that prevented you from installing it. How did you try to install it originally (take us through it step by step)? What is the error you are getting (i.e. does it give you a reason for the failure when you try to install it?) Do you have the 2 green lights on at the front of the modem - they should be labelled "ADSL/Phone Line" and "USB" respectively. Are they on constantly, or flashing? I know its a stupid questioj but you wouldn't believe how many times it is the problem - are you sure all the wires are plugged in properly?

What Belkin model is it? I only ask this as they do several different units with the same functionality.

Steve's point is really good - get very familiar with Windows' "Device Manager" panel. Items with problems have yellow 'warning' icons next to them. This is the conventional way of checking hardware issues.

I install the software for the speedtouch modem as it says and then plug the modem in at the end of the installation but the usb light flashes red, in the manual this means it is not plugged in properly, wanadoo say that it is not get enough power. On the laptop both the lights come up solid green like they are supposed to straight away. The PCI usb cards are installed properly as i have checked on the hardware manager, the computer has two other usb ports aswell.

thanks

Hmm the Wanadoo diagnosis sounds slightly fishy to me. If you have a USB PCI card and 2 standard (USB 1.1) ports, power shouldn't be an issue. I run a speedtouch on a PC that it is of a similar age to yours with no problems at all. If the USB light is flashing its a sure sign the installation failed and/or there is a problem with the driver.

Another option might be to make absolutely certain that you are using the very latest Speedtouch drivers, which you can get from the Speedtouch website: (use a friend's internet connection to download and put on CD or whatever): http://www.speedtouchdsl.com/support.htm

In the first instance, avoid complicating the situation by using the new PCI card. When installing, use one of the original USB ports and try to make a note of any error(s) that pop up - in most cases things won't go wrong without giving you some feedback.

What was the belkin model no.?
