Home IT fixer required
- Martin (2nd May 2011 - 22:18:26)

Does anyone know of a good IT consultant/company who can do a home visit to sort out our broadband wireless connection issues? Our laptop consistently drops its wireless connection to our router and despite continued efforts by us, we and our broadband provider have been unable to fix it, so suspect it may be something to do with the wireless network communication adapter within the laptop. That's as far as our amateur IT skills and on line research have taken us!
Thanks

You may very well be right about the laptop - some (toshibas for example., may turn off power to the wireless adapter to save energy. Have a look in Device Manager (right-click 'Computer' or 'My Computer' > choose 'Manage' > Device Manager > expand Network Adaptors > right-click on the one relating to the wireless adaptor. There will be power option settings there, and, (depending on make and model of the laptop) - more settings elsewhere; (it's been a while since I saw a toshiba laptop, so can't be more detailed, but they had all sorts of sophisticated settings for swapping between wired and wireless settings, locating hotspots, and geneally beig whizzy with wireless). Good luck!

Hi,
Happy to pop over and sort it out if you are local.

Might be lots of things from channel selection on your router to an actual fault.

Hi
Many thanks for your kind responses. We managed to download the latest WLAN Drivers for the laptop and so far it seems to be more stable in holding the wireless connection. Time will tell if we have actually managed to fix the problem on a permanent basis so will report back if we need to accept your kind offer of assistance (we are fairly local to Liphook - 3 miles North).
Kind regards
