Liphook golf course archaeology
- Malcolm Barker (29th Apr 2011 - 12:50:21)

On the left hand side of the 16th fairway at Liphook Golf Club there are the remains of a quarry. Going diagonally up the 17th fairway going away from the quarry is a raised section of land with channels on either side. Can anyone tell me from when was the quarry dated, what was quarried, and what is origin of the raised section of land on the 17th fairway. Do these features have Roman connections?

Not being a golfer I am not familiar with the course but I do know that during the First World War sand was quarried from the Army land that abutts Weavers Down.

They had a narrow gauge steam railway to transport the sand down to the standard gauge railway at Longmoor and from there it was taken to Portsmouth docks and shipped across to the battlefields for use in sandbags to reinforce the trenches.

I hope this helps
