local elections
- Helen (11th Apr 2011 - 12:54:18)
I would like to add some thoughts I have regarding the district and parish council elections.
I have heard on good authority that Sam james our district councillor is seriously ill. I cannot believe that the conservatives have chosen a candidate who will not be able to represent Liphook for another 4 years if his health precludes this.
Secondly, regarding the parish council, I cannot believe that Nigel newman has put his name forward again after resigning from chairmanship, and also not being on any committees since he absented himself from meetings. What is his reasoning behind wanting to stand again? it is not to represent Liphook, or he would not have resigned.
There is another councillor who does not serve on any committees Greg Amey. Why does he not? this should not be within the rules.
Thirdly, regarding Dr Judge, the rules allow for candidates who are living up to 3 miles away from Liphook to be a parish councillor so she is elegible, regardless of her work situation, which I do not believe she is working in Liphook. Someone mentioned the house Northcote on the headley road, this in in the hands of developers who are going to demolish the house and turn it into three dwellings. There was a planning application on the website.

Helen
you are correct. Two of the present members of the council do not participate on any of the committees.
Clr Newman for reasons publicly revealed and Clr Amery for reasons not known.
However seven new nominations have been received for next months Parish Council Elections.adding to the ten sitting members. Sadly the very hard working Phillip Jordon is not carrying on and Clr Wilson moved away from the district several months ago.
This is the first Parish Council Elections needing a vote for 12 years so it very important that there is a high turn out to ensure public backing for the next council.
These changes together with needed changes in the Parish Office will hopefully provide the Village with a united Team which has not always been the way in the past.

the time for nominations has closed, however I think the article today in the Herald is very biased, trumpeting several of the candidates over the others. It will be good to get a lot of new people on, do not vote for those who do not do anything except get themselves in the paper!..
It is clear that Gabrielle Pike is going to run publicity for those she favours, ie the big headline for Dr Judge who is not working or living in Liphook, perhaps thats why she needs a boost? , Also Bill Mouland- Journalist I did not think they were allowed on Parish Councils?

Thanks for the vote of confidence Helen !
I think I'll stick to the easier things to sort out than Liphook, such as world poverty and global warming !!!
But on a serious note - I expect being part of the parish council is a tough job - not disimilar to a football referee (who deserve every penny they get).
I try avoid being critical of anyone who is prepared to put the amount of time that many contribute for free (mostly) - (councillors, coaches, charity organisers etc. etc.) on the basis that "if I'm not prepared to do the job, I can't be critical of those that are prepared to put the time and effort in".
It would be great to see a fab turn out at the locally elections and actually see democracy in proper action !! With no complaints about the outcome - and those elected supported.
Ooops - just woke up in the real world - realising I'd done two whole serious paragraphs - and one in cloud cuckoo land !!!
One day tho' !! Wait 'til the kids fly the nest, then travel the world, then return to Liphook and give back to the community :-)
Time to crack open the first beer. Happy Weekend !
Cheers, Finchie

Well I'm eagerly(?) waiting to cast my vote but why should I vote for any of them in particular.
I don't hear anyone trying to persuade me either way?
What are those of you hoping to be elected going to do for our lovely village?
If none of the candidates can inform me of their aims I'll have to do all my research on google which I'm not sure is the ideal for anyone!

I think that it is time to give new people a chance, and some of the candidates who have already been on the council, have withdrawn from all committees and some have even left the area apparently last year yet still allowed to remain on the council. There is no payment for the work at parish level but there is at District and County level so we should be just as aware of where we are casting our votes at that level. Perhaps there also it is time to give new people a chance, and not vote purely along party lines, and I am particularly upset to see that one of the labour candidates for District Council lives I think in Portsmouth? Why should she represent Liphook?.

Seems like some of this thread is angst and sour grapes about people standing who for some reason they don't like rather than anything proper about the council elections. Oh well.
