Old Thorns Carvery
- Rob (9th Apr 2011 - 18:53:28)
Just had to comment on the Sunday carvery at Old Thorns....since the refurb the dining room has most certainly lost its intimacy....the carvery area resembles a school cafeteria....with a sign reminding those diners that only one visit is allowed to the carvery and if someone does revisit they will be charged a second full price!! What?
OK, we are not talking about a £6.99 carvery here...the price is £11.95...the food is ok at best. While the meats are nicely roasted, the vegetables are dry and predictable...corn, peas, carrots...etc..You have to ring the bell in order to get served by your dinner lady...oops...carvery staff! While, of course we understand the restaurant needs to make money, and people gorging is not very pleasant, however I am sure if they took into account those people who have less on their plate, vs the ones who go up for more vegetables etc... everything would come out even on their costings. Not everyone likes to pile their plate up initially...some people prefer to space out their meal and this cannot be accomplished with their rule! Other carveries out there will charge an additional small supplemental charge for a second visit to the carvery which is fair enough.
Onto the salad bar...oh no...stayed at the hotel for 3 nights recently and on two days the salad bar consisted of 2 kinds of pasta, potato salad, lettuce, croutons, and salad dressing!!!! We asked about the bar being topped up and were told that is all they had available! At £4.95 for a visit to the salad bar with a bowl the size of a small soup bowl...it will only be a matter of time before the novelty of the decor to wear off and the reality of the price gouging to hit home.
