Guildford A3 Average speed camera's
- Greg (29th Mar 2019 - 12:13:27)

Can anyone tell me if the average speed cameras that have appeared on the A3 London bound at Guildford are in use or are soon to be in use ?

I know if you go through there on weekday mornings its unlikely you will be any where near the speed limit, but occasionally I go to the airport early doors.

thanks

Greg

Greg my advice is to stick within the 50mph limit because if the cameras don’t currently work they soon will!

I also work at all the London airports and can confirm that the speed signs that flash up your speed around Heathrow’s perimeter roads are also taking a note of your number plate. You will be prosecuted if you do not adhere to the 30mph speed limit. As staff there are posters in our car parks confirming how many points and what percentage of your weekly earning the courts will take depending on how far over the limit you are! You have been warned!!!

The sign on the A3 only went up yesterday but the one on the A31 warning people about the average cameras went up around 2 weeks ago. I would guess that if they have not been switched on, they soon will be.

At the moment the traffic seems to be observing the limits and it is really having a big impact on my commute. I am saving large amounts of time and fuel. I do hope it continues. Where before I was queuing from Milford most days, I now drive all the way through Guildford with only light traffic most days (not always though).

The next phase is to increase the capacity at all the Guildford junctions. The expectation is that the two schemes combined will have a 'massive impact' on travel times (see www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/...).

On the way home in the evening (southbound) the traffic lights for joining traffic on the A3 at Guildford have also been great. According to the early figures there has been a 'big impact' on travel times (see www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/...)

Simple stick to the speed limit

Speed cameras used to only appear at accident blackspots. Now they appear wherever it seems they can be used to generate revenue...

Tried to get a speed camera near a school? Yet on our safest roads we see lots of speed enforcement...

Richard, I do agree with your point generally, but the stretch of A3 where the cameras have been installed is a notorious accident blackspot.

Jack,

I stand corrected, I don't recall ever seeing an accident there...maybe I just go through there at quieter times

They should be in force all the time the yellow sets of cameras same ones you see on the motorways.

When we were driving that way there was an accident there it had only just happened it was not last Sunday but Sunday before

Prob slowing down for the cameras as there were 3 cars and they all had gone into the back of each other . Take away the cameras it may not of happened don't know though can't say !!

Think there been accidents there early morning when my husband going to work at 4am once there was a car and the car had ended up on the other side of the road as your coming upto the bridge at the top of the hill there I think that's where it was but yes there's been a couple of accident along that stretch of road before cameras and an accident the other day after cameras unfortunately .

Brian - the traffic lights southbound at the Dennis roundabout junction might help the A3 flow but my goodnes all they seem to do is back it right back up the Aldershot road or Worplesdon Roads as cars can no longer slowly join the A3 keeping the traffic moving on the roundabout. Now there is a large empty space on the slip road both before and after the lights and queues going back into Guildford sometimes with only space for one car to cross the junction per traffic light cycle. Few people seem to use the whole length of the slip road and seem to insist joining the A3 at the very first moment.

It doesn't seem to make any sense for those of us joining the A3. I'm glad it's made a positive impact for others though.

Elizabeth - Thanks for your comments.

My observations of these lights is that they are meant to stagger the traffic so that the traffic coming on to the A3 joins at speed. You will continue to get that driver that insists on treating the junction like a T-junction and forcing the traffic on the A3 to come to a halt to let them in. They are not perfect and they do get swamped at peak times.

However, the effect is that the queues are now shorter and the queues appear for a shorter period on the A3. They are meant to be the first 'smart' non-motorway lights in the country and they should adjust to the traffic flows.

I have noticed that drivers just accelerate on to the back of the queue and then brake hard, negating some of their benefit. IMHO I would move the point at which the traffic merges further forward, creating a larger gap that can not be bridged in this way and then both lanes would flow better.

It is meant to be a trial so I would suggest writing to Highways England to suggest they tweak the algorithm to allow more traffic to join from the Aldershot road. Hopefully everyone can be better of. The consensus where I work is that they are saving an average of 10 mins commuting time on an average day (can be less, can be more).

Coming back home from Jacobs Well yesterday - the queue on the Worplesdon Road went on for miles and miles.

When you were able to get to the traffic lights you couldn't move through the hatching when they had turned green. I sat through 3 traffic light changes under the fly-over at the roundabout before even being able to move around the corner past the yellow hatching.

The queues going back into Guildford [past Homebase etc] were even worse.

I thought that there must have been a crash on the A3 so was staggered when it was all running as smooth as glass, and it was just the phased entry to the slip road that was causing all the miles and miles of stationary traffic.
