Move to Liphook?
- AN (25th Mar 2019 23:13:11)
Hi all, I am pretty sure this question gets asked regularly, but alas I could not find a recent one.
I am looking to move to the area with two late primary school aged children and I just wanted to reach out to residents to ask their opinion on Liphook as a place for family life?
What do you love about the area? What are the down sides?
I know this is a broad question, but I want to make sure the move for us and our kids is the right one - so any information is greatly received.
Many thanks in advance!!!

Hi,
Good points - Attractive rural area, with friendly people.
Not so good points - Congested roads at peak times.
Growing population due to more new housing, that loses it's village feel.

Maybe look at Bordon. It’s much quieter and more upmarket and has better schools and infrustucture. Plus it’s soon going to have a brand new shopping centre and cinema. No real facilities for kids or youths in Liphook. Which needs regeneration especially Station Rd area. Train service can be dire for commuters and most importantly there usually no yellow bananas in the local overpriced supermarket.

Too many Adrians but otherwise a great place to raise a family. Talkback though is definitely not the best place to get an informative opinion

Hi AN
We moved as a family with young children 10 years ago and have not looked back. Good little primary school that feeds the best achieving state senior school for miles around even outranking some of the numerous private schools around here. I would disagree that there is nothing for kids to do around here the village has a very active Scout and Guide group, there is a local Football and Cricket club, a couple of amateur dramatics companies and various after school clubs. A few miles down the road we have the Haslemere leisure centre with pool, gym, squash etc.
Congestion at peak times is a problem in the village center but that can be balanced with the fact you can walk to anywhere within the village quite easily. We are surrounded by beautiful countryside. Liphook also has a main line train station. Not sure where the comment about Bordon being more up market came from (take a look for yourself) but I can only assume it was a tongue in cheek comment or that particular contributor doesn't want more people moving into Liphook.

We’re in the same boat and considering a move to Liohook from Richmond Upon Thames. A big change of life for us but hoping Liphook can offer us a calmer pace & more space. You’ll have to let me know if you do move and how you find it. :-)

If I were moving from London and used to good facilities. I would consider the towns of Godalming or Haslemere first. Property maybe more expensive in these towns but they offer far superior shopping, schools and much faster train services to London. Liphook is okay though and if you can’t afford the above better areas I’m sure you would still be happy. The locals in the main are freindly Salt of the Earth types.

If you have school age children, do check whether the schools have any places in the relevant year groups. There have been so many new houses in Liphook and the schools may be full.

This is a great place to live. Accessability by train to London one hour - great seaside West Wittering etc. Easy for the New Forest. The schools are good Bohunt outstanding and we have a library. Don't be put off by some of the posters on this site.

The Bordone region of Hampshite is quite splendidly delightful now and gone are the days of loosing hubcaps when you stopped at the lights. Liphook residents think they live in a superior area but more chav and pie key types live in Liphook than in Bordon. Liphook also apparently now has County Lines supplies for the feral youth. The main reason that houses are slightly dearer in Liphook is the train station and it’s unreliable slow service to London. Just ask Adrian yellow bannannas.

We moved here from Godalming nearly five years and we don't regret our decision. My advice is come and spend the day here, look around and see whether you get that feeling when you know something feels right.

I think that you would need a compulsory purchase of station rd to completely
rebuild that part of Liphook. Because there is more money to be made in housing estates that is what is built. The plus side is at the moment there are no charges for parking. YET.

Hmmm, those saying how delightful Bordon is now, should take a look at the crime statistics: Jan 2019 95 crimes reported in Bordon, including 5 anti-social behaviour, and 34 violent crimes. Liphook for the same period 0 anti social and 12 violent crimes, Take a look along Alpine Road in Bordon if you need convincing....

Re: Move to Liphook?
- Sarah (27th Mar 2019 14:21:38)
It’s a lovely place to live. Semi-rural, with beautiful countryside, a short drive to lovely market towns and the beach. The schools are brilliant, though are becoming harder to get in to. There is a wonderful yearly carnival in October. Dance, football, ballet, netball, cricket clubs etc for children, plus scouts and Brownie Guide groups and numerous clubs associated with the schools. Many people here commute and have lived elsewhere first, so it isn’t a village of bumpkins. However, it is becoming busier, which many of us do moan about, as people move here for the schools in particular.
Talkback is notorious for grumbling people and you perhaps have to pick through and ignore the rudest replies!

- liz (27th Mar 2019 15:41:43)
Sarah
I can assure you there are a lot of people in Liphook who have lived in the village all their lives, don't commute and are not bumpkins. We are only 40 miles from central London for heaven's sake, its not the outback!

Re: Move to Liphook?
- Sarah (27th Mar 2019 16:48:52)
Liz
Well, yes, that is exactly what I was saying - no bumpkins in Liphook. I'm not sure what your point was?
I've lived here for almost 20 years and raised my children here, but like many other residents I have also lived elsewhere and have commuted outside Liphook for work (whether that be London or somewhere more local like Guildford). I was stressing that Liphook isn't a village of bumpkins, it's a lovely place to live with lots of busy, interesting people.. There is no insult in what I was saying to anyone, so I'm not sure how you took it as an insult? I think you've twisted my words simply to have a rant. Good old talkback!

Re: Move to Liphook?
- liz (28th Mar 2019 08:15:33)
Sarah
You said "many people here commute and have lived elsewhere first, so it isn't a village of bumpkins" which came over as condescending to say the least. Now it appears that is not quite what you meant but it IS what you said. My response was hardly a "rant" - a much overused word nowadays.
To the original poster, Liphook is a lovely place to live but if you plan to commute you would be better off in Haslemere or Petersfield for a much better service.

- ian (28th Mar 2019 09:45:04)
I have commuted from Liphook to Waterloo for years and not a problem. Issues that affect services apply to other stations on the line as well but travel times/ comfort etc all fine and parking in Liphook is easy as very few yellow lines so do not have to pay to park. Nice place to bring up a family as well

Re: Move to Liphook?

Ahh Ian, so you are one of the commuters that do not pay to park and clog the roads up!

Ian what is the price of a season ticket from Liphook to London these days? It must be in the thousands

 |
Re: Move to Liphook?
- Helen (28th Mar 2019 14:35:36)
Sarah the implication was that if a person had not worked and lived elsewhere
they would be a bumpkin. That is what you appeared to be saying.

Re: Move to Liphook?
- liz (28th Mar 2019 14:51:39)
Ian
If you have commuted from Liphook for many years you will know that Haslemere and Petersfield have far more services, particularly at peak times. Also trains that are "run fast" because they are running late will miss Liphook, Liss etc. far more often than the busier stations.
Commuter parking in the village is becoming a real problem for those living in the village and is likely to get worse as Liphook and Bordon expand.

Re: Move to Liphook?
- ian (28th Mar 2019 15:22:11)
Ann - Yes I am but I always park legally and never on private or restricted roads
Irene - Over £5k now including my travelcard. Hence I will try and avoid car park charges where legally possible.

Re: Move to Liphook?
- Dave (28th Mar 2019 17:30:20)
@ Liz, Properties in Haslemere and Petersfield a lot more expensive than Liphook. Liphook a great place to move to and commuting fine from the village, especially when you see how much more house you get for your money here + station, + South Downs National Park + Schools etc.

Ian,
Do you live in Liphook? If you do why don’t you walk to the station?

Re: Move to Liphook?

Because the pavements have dirty dog poo and there’s Adrian’s yellow bannanna skins all over the shop.

Mac - yes I do live in Liphook, have done for the last 32 years but far enough away from the station to need to drive, especially in the winter

This thread seems to be turning out to be slanging match between individuals - not a good advert for Liphook folk - really we are nice people -honest - Liphook Talkback is probably not best venue to get a unbiased approach of Liphook Life - as another poster suggested come spend a day - or so over a couple of weeks to get a feel for life here, it's what we did over 20 years ago & proved most helpful in our decision to move- helps weigh up pr0s& cons - especially on what you see as important.

Re: Move to Liphook?
- oldie (29th Mar 2019 21:25:13)
I'll give you the 'unbiased' advice you need! (he he), call it the 'alternative' Tourist Information
Positive reasons for moving from Richmond/ Kingston to Liphook:
1) You can sell a 2 bed flat for half a million and buy a 4 bed detached house
2) You can send your kids to the local comp without needing to buy them a stab vest (for now)
3) Or if you're loaded some good posh schools (of course you could stay in London for that)
4) Lots of beautiful countryside just a short walk or drive away
5) Very nice people (overall), but then folk are nice everywhere really
6) Less drug gangs (we think but aren't sure anymore)
7) The sea is closer
8) Country drives (did we mention the countryside?) yep still got some near here, enjoy it whilst you can
Negative reasons for leaving Richmond/ Kingston and moving to Liphook:
1) Everything is a car drive or train journey away
2) As Adrian will tell you, trains are a pain and expensive
3) Fast trains don't stop here
4) You can't cycle anywhere without braving the narrow lanes and rushing mums in 4x4s or white van man disregarding the national speed limit
5) We don't have the river Thames or Richmond Park, Bushey Park, Hampton Court, Wimbledon Common etc within a 10 minute cycle
6) We are kind of stuck on an island here with one another (that includes bannannas Adrian)
7) Not much in the way of shopping experiences (but we have a much praised Sainsburys, I won't mention Adrian again)
8) You will buy here then wonder what you've done for a bit, then either get into it 100% or regret leaving London
9) You'll never afford to be able to go back
There's more plusses and minuses like no police, slightly slower pace of life, groups etc but that'll do to be going on with.
Why do we need to 'advertise' Liphook, it's our well kept secret, or used to be! We moved the A3 so that nobody would be able to find us. There is no shortage of demand for houses here (on the contrary we are inundated)!
But whatever you choose to do, best of luck, within three generations you can start to consider yourselves local ha ha (only kidding) it's ok here, kind of nice, if a little bit 'just another commuter place sort of not too far from London' now really. We like it.
