ABOUT U3A
You know that time of your life when you’re retired but you’re not ready to be labelled ‘old’? Well, it’s got a name: the Third Age. The Third Age comes after middle age, when you were just too busy with work or with bringing up a family, but it’s not old age, because you’re still active and you wish to remain active. You may be lucky enough to reach the Third Age in your 50s, or you may be in your 60s or you may be older than that – age really doesn’t matter. What matters is that you’re retired or semi-retired and you want to do something with your life.
That’s where the U3A comes in. It stands for ‘University of the Third Age’ and is a national organisation with more than a thousand local ‘clubs’ and 424,000 members. It is not really a University at all. It doesn’t have professors and it’s not about studying for exams or degrees. Neither is it just for people who went to University in their youth – in fact most of our members went straight from school into the world of work. So what is it? It’s an all-embracing club for retired people, which is run by them and for them. And there’s one right here in Liphook.
Liphook U3A has 600 members and over 40 interest groups. These range from groups studying geology, history or a modern language to groups catering for those who like to get together to go to the theatre, taste wine, play chess or arrange flowers, to groups providing an opportunity to engage in more active pursuits such as walking, tennis or boules. They all meet during working hours, to help fill that gap in your life which opened up when you retired. And if there isn’t already a group doing what you want to do, you can start one. Everything’s organised from the bottom up, but help is always available. We’re a charity, so we are required to keep the cost to our members to a minimum. You can join Liphook U3A for a very reasonable £12 a year (some of our interest groups require an additional fee to cover their costs).
Interested maybe, but not sure if it’s for you? Well, Liphook U3A is holding an Open Day on Monday 11 March, starting at 2pm in Liphook Millennium Hall. All the interest groups will be represented, refreshments will be available and entry is free. Why not drop in? It is completely informal and you can wander round without being checked in or pestered. If you can’t make the Open Day, come along to one of our monthly general meetings, held in the Millennium Hall at 2pm on the first Monday of each month, and meet some like-minded people.
Life after retirement can be lonely and unproductive, but it doesn’t have to be. Liphook U3A offers an opportunity for third-agers to learn new skills or to practice old ones and to make fresh friendships. Call our membership secretary, Carolyn Williamson, on 01428 722730 or e-mail our chairman, Paul Reynolds, on chairman1@liphooku3a.org.uk, if you’d like to find out more. After all, why should young people have all the fun?
